Blue Jays: 2015 edition

Miguel Castro was lights out today. He had a fine fastball and a wicked change-up. Better still, his slider was evil and nasty. Great pitch. Two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief.

If he can command all 3 pitches like that, as soon as he can build up his arm he'll be a starter of the same caliber as Sanchez or Stroman. Until then, he can relieve, make some spot starts and may even get some opportunities to close when a RHP makes more sense than Cecil. Should be good for 100+ innings this year. What an asset!

Exciting to see a young arm like that on the team.

Glad to see Delabar getting back into form.

Now, if Estrada performs and Santana can pitch again, the BJ's pitching could go from worrisome to stellar.

Kid just turned 20 in December, still not fully developed physically!

Same with Osuna; he just turned 20 last month.

I was looking through the Jays spring numbers, and I was surprised that very few of the Blue Jays are having poor springs. Now the player with the most disappointing spring is Marcus Stroman, but let's look at a few of the guys who have put up poor stats, to this point, in the spring....

No offence Oagre, but I been following baseball since 1982, and whether players have a great spring or not is absolutely meaningless.

I've seen players hit well in spring training, and then go on an 2 for 50 slump when season starts. I also seen players who couldnt hit a barn door, and then go on a complete tear in April and May.

Spring training means nothing unfortunately

And the Jays are near the top of their league! HaHa.

It is helping establish who heads North though, in particular who is in the BP which was so poor last season.

I'll be very disappointed if Travis's strong performance is illusory.

Has anyone seen a report on Santana? All I have seen is that he arrived in camp and can opt out on Apr. 28. Nothing as to how he is or isn't progressing.
I know the Jays figured he would not be ready for the majors when the season opened. It would be nice to hear something!
Would love to see him make it back!

I dont dispute that. I'm just saying how good (or bad) a player's spring training is has no bearing on how well he does in the upcoming regular season

I am very disappointed about Delabar. I like him and the reports I have read said he was close to regaining his 2013 form.

But if Osuna and Castro are both pitching better than him [and who am I to say otherwise!] then you gotta do what you gotta do.

But I am sure Delabar will be called up sooner or later if he pitches well in Buffalo.

I'm thinking the weighted ball program ain't so great long term, the 3 other jays pitchers who took it up were Casey Janssen, Dustin McGowan and Brett Cecil.
They didn't even try to resign Janssen or McGowan and Cecil's not even pitched yet this spring due to soreness.
Do the Jays know something they're not telling ?

I believe Cecil did pitch yesterday.

Seems to be a disagreement between AA and Gibbons regarding Delabar. Gibbons wanted to give him more time.

I doubt that they will start with Castro and Osuna in the pen. More likely Castro and Drabek (who pitched well yesterday). Still need to see Estrada who is also likely to join the pen.

I tried the same in high school when I was a pitcher with a small medicine ball. I would toss that thing around all winter thinking it would add MPH to my fastball. It didnt do shit, and it ruined my arm for a whole year

The Toronto Blue Jays now know which pitchers they’ll be facing when they play the New York Yankees in their first series of the season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is giving Masahiro Tanaka the opening day start. Michael Pineda will follow Tanaka, then C.C. Sabathia will face the Blue Jays on April 9th to close out the series.

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Kyle Drabek has been claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox.

Drabek, 27, spent most of the 2014 season with Toronto’s triple-A Buffalo affiliate, where he posted a 4.18 ERA with 68 strikeouts and 30 walks in 99 innings. He started 13 games with the Bisons while pitching in relief 19 times.

Initially acquired along with Michael Taylor and Travis d’Arnaud for Roy Halladay in December of 2009, Drabek struggled to realize his potential with the Blue Jays. The former first-round pick posted a 5.27 ERA with 118 strikeouts and 111 walks in parts of five seasons at the big league level, mostly as a starter.

Drabek is out of options, meaning he had to clear waivers before being sent to triple-A. The move opens a spot up on the 40-man roster of the Blue Jays, who also announced that left-hander Scott Barnes cleared waivers and was outrighted to triple-A.
