I can see Skyrider right now.....

"Hey guys, I have a half eaten Kit Kat, you want it? 50 cents. If not, I'm tossing it in the garbage you cheap asses."

I think it would be awesome if they let school kids offer to return the carts as, say some type of school fundraiser for a trip or something. I would hand it over every time

I like that idea too. Of course Lovehobby would tell you it should go to the teachers salaries.

Friend: "Thanks for the lift Skyrider. Lucky that both of us are going to the same place"

Skyrider: "No problem, but you now owe me $1 for gas"

Friend: "Why? You were driving here anyway. I thought it was a nice gesture"

SKyrider: "No free rides pal. You should be lucky I'm charging you only $1 because if you drove yourself, the gas and wear and tear on your car would probably be $2. Be thankful that you just saved yourself a buck"

Ex-friend: "Wow. I'll drive myself next time"

Skyrider: "I don't get it. I offer to drive people around for half price yet people complain?!?!? People sure are cheap and always trying to rip you off for freebies!"

I've eaten at restaurants and food courts endless numbers of times where I make sure I buy a newspaper before hand so I have something to do while I eat. If I was to add up all the Toronto Stars and Toronto Suns (and the occasional National Post), it would be $100s and $100s of dollars over the years. Possibly even $1,000s as I used to buy a Sun almost every day when I rode the subway in the 90s.

And every time, I've left it there on the table when I leave for whomever wants it next in hopes someone grabs it before the servers toss it in the garbage. When I used to ride the subway, I'd do the same. I had my fun reading it. I've leave it for someone else.

Before leaving, Skyrider would be going table to table trying to pawn it off for 25 cents. And if nobody wants it, he'll bury it deep in the garbage can so nobody gets it.

that guy expressed what he would've done in your shoes, but note that he didn't expect to receive your parking ticket. He didn't ask.
Yes, I can see that is one possible interpretation. So, he would have accepted the ticket if it was initially offered as a freebie (a 100% discount)? But, he would rather pay the full fare at the meter if the initial offer was only 1/2 a freebie (a 50% discount)?

Speaking only for myself, I always offer to pay the full value when someone gives me a freebie and I always reciprocate if someone gives me a Christmas or birthday gift (no, I do not "re-gift"). I've been paying my own way since I was 14 and never want to live any part of my life on someone else's dime. I guess I will never understand why some people, like that dude, expect freebies (especially from a random stranger).

Buddy, you're cheap. Admit it. You would get some respect around here if you just admitted you're frugal and try to nickel and dime everyone. Some people are more giving to others. You're on the end of the spectrum that counts pennies.

When you share a piece of gum from a 12-pack, do you charge people a dime?

This thread still happening? Every time I read the title, I keep expecting the last post to be some sort of punchline. "An idiot and a jerk walk into a bar, etc"

Most people don't care to barter over a few dollars and find it offensive when somebody solicits payment for small gestures that are normally offered freely. They don't want to go through the hassle of determining whether you and your offer are legit over saving a couple of dollars. It's a waste of time.

Do you find it odd that every person in this thread believes that what you did was a jerk move?

Aside: payment doesn't have to be monetary. When I help an old lady carry and load her groceries into her car and decline her offer to pay for my assistance, I've paid her with kindness. I feel good about it. We're both winners. Perhaps you will disagree, however helping others without expecting money in return can be very fulfilling.

Exactly. At an airport, one time I helped a lady with her jam packed luggage cart. She also had a baby carriage too. So unless you are Superman it is impossible to push both at once, especially the distance she tried to do which was across the parking lot. She pushed the baby carriage, I pushed the luggage trolley. Not a big deal.

I guess if I wanted to nickel and dime her I would have asked her first if she wanted to pay me a few bucks as if I was an airport porter. Makes sense as a porter would have probably got a small tip for doing the exact same thing.

Most people would do it for free. Skyrider would first ask for $2.

Is the concern that the ticket might not be legit? If so, then this would be the case whether it was offered for free or not.

less social grace than a crack head. now do you see why you are destined to always pay for poonie? not too late to do a complete 180. you might actually find a friend that doesn't loath having to see you.

that dude expected not a freebie...but for you to act like 99% of the people in the world. so he was probably taken back that fuckwads like you actuay exist despite yourselves.
crazy world.

Actually it is far more likely to be fake if someone is trying to squeeze a few bucks out of you for it.

He must have decided the additional few dollars he had to spend were worth the pain and bitterness it would inflict on a cheap bastard like you.

Judging by this thread and the fact you have been stewing over it for days mission accomplished. Bravo BMW driver!

Now that's just plain mean

You mean ... rip it up so they don't know they have to pay and then will be shocked when they get hit with a bigger fine for failure to pay.
They avoid the anxiety of coming out and seeing that yellow ticket on their windshield. That is a lousy feeling that they don't have to experience.

Feel free to spare Skyrider the anxiety, but leave my windshield alone

So instead of experiencing a lousy feeling right now, they can experience a good feeling later . . . when they get a notice of failure to pay outstanding fine which now has a penalty added to it.

Thanks, but no thanks!

Haven't you heard the phrase that "ignorance is bliss"? No knowledge of the ticket=no anxiety.

if you think you are doing someone a favor by removing is just plain stupid.
Let's just say my mother didn't raise any stupid children.

As the title of the thread indicates, an idiot is someone who is not too smart.

Directly above the center of the earth
1) Will everyone stop piling on SkyRider already? It's getting real tiresome.
2) Insanity means doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different response. I have faith in SkyRider that if he does the same thing a few more times and gets the same response, he'll be able to put two and two together. Even if he can't, he sure won't tell anyone around here.
3) A lot of the people in $1000 suits who drive Beemers can't afford it. They just want you to think they can. I don't know if the person in this story is one of them, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit.

4) And now the next installment of 'Is there an idiot and a jerk in this story? And if so, who is it?"

One of my neighbors has a fruit tree in his back yard near the edge of his property. Some branches extend over his fence and hang over the sidewalk. People walking under the branches will often help themselves to the fruit as they walk by. There are other branches that extend over the fence that separates his back yard from the front yard, and hang over the front yard, which is not fenced in. The other day he told me that as he left his driveway to do an errand, he saw a grown woman, not a kid, standing squarely in his front yard with a Loblaws bag, helping herself to the fruit. What would have been the proper thing for him to do? Weigh in with your answers and then I will tell you what he said he did.

I'll take a guess.

He seems to be a lax guy not caring that people pick fruit off his tree, and he doesn't seem to care that his own tree and branches loom over the sidewalk low enough for people to pick from it. If a tree's branches are low enough to pick fruit, (I've never seen a fruit tree looming that low over a sidewalk), it's probably low enough that during the summer when the branches are full of leaves and fruit it probably low enough that people have to duck to walk by it, especially on windy days.

So I'll guess he didn't care again and let the lady fill her bag.
