Wonder how skyryder manages those grocery carts where a quarter or a loony needs to be inserted. I usually leave mine sitting right by my vehicle and leave the coin in when I'm done or pass the cart on to someone going in. Bet he has a strategy to recoup the coins! Wonder how the scenario would play out if he found a loose cart with a coin still in it. Bet he would pass it on when he's done but demand payment
Umm...everyone has a strategy for that. It's called putting the cart back where you found it instead of sitting loose where it can roll into someone's car. You know, that whole common sense/common courtesy strategy

Or, there are people who will walk up to you to give you a quarter so they can take over the cart. Never once has anybody say I should give them the cart for free. In fact, never once have I even had to ask anyone for the quarter, it was always freely offered.

i am kind of surprised skyrider. i usually do give my spot and ticket for free. i consider it a small good deed of the day regardless of what they are driving.
Yes, you did perform a good deed.

What irritated me is that gentleman felt I should have offered him a 100% instead of a 50% discount. In my circle we call people like that freeloaders and/or moochers.

He was not a freeloader and/or a moocher, he was quite happy to buy his own ticket at full price.

Maybe he thought you were a street bum who was stealing tickets, or he is someone who normally gives his used tickets away for free and resented someone who may have been given the ticket for free, now trying to charge him for the ticket.

Your original story doesn't seem to include him asking for it for free. Simply that he said if he were you he would have given it for free after you attempted the half-price offer.

So he wasn't trying to be a freeloader just pointing out that you are a jerk for trying to recoup a few bucks. From your account YOU initiated the conversation.

I give it a way all the time... Pay it forward. I have had others give it to me. Dont need the $3.00, the gesture is better and getting it returned is even better!
+1
A few weeks ago I was at Sunnybrook hospital. I drove a friend of mine there for a appointment. I wasn't' sure how long the appointment would take so I paid for 2hrs. Turned out we were there for 50mins. When I came back to my car there was a man walking up to the parking machine. I approached him and told him that I have 1hr left on my ticket and he can have it. The cost at SB is $10. an hr. I always believe in paying it forward in these situations. Strangers have giving me their tickets over the years also.

I've had people run over to my car window just to hand me a ticket for free since it had time left on it. I give mine to others freely too. It's this common decency that I love about living in Canada.

Man. Must suck to start a thread about idiots and jerks, simply to discover that your readership has practically unanimously declared
You to be the winner of that award!

Skyrider, haven't you ever parked at a meter where there was time left on it ? and it was a bonus to you ! kinda like what goes around comes around …..if you would've said i can have your parking meter for half price i would've laughed so you can call me an idiot and jerk if you need to too. Many times i leave parking meters with time on them and thats just the way it goes. Don't sweat the small things in life or your always going to be stressed out. Madonna xo

I usually put the cart back in the store (like at Staples) or tuck somewhere where it won't roll into a car or in a designated drop off area. It is courtesy and common decency.

A jerk tries to sell his unused parking time. A stand up guy offers it free.

Yes, I parked at a meter with time on it and I left a meter with time on it as well. Usually we are talking minutes and not hours.

However, this one time, my appointment was cancelled and I had something like 2 hours of unexpired time left. On my way back to my car I see this dude getting ready to pay at the meter so I told him that I had almost 2 hours of unexpired time and would sell the time to him for half price. He declined the offer which is fine. No sweat off my back.

Then in the next breathe he said if he were me he would give the ticket to him for free. I thought this remark was totally unnecessary sounded like he was laying a guilt trip on me to get a free ticket. At that point I walked away and lost sight of him. (Wouldn't it be funny if he was lying low waiting for me to pull out of my spot?)

Anyway, I don't get to go downtown much anymore so I spent the next almost 2 hours touring the sights. The parking ticket did not go to waste.

I agree with your advice not to sweat the small stuff in life.

BTW: My next project is to pay 25 cent for rental of shopping carts and then resell those carts to random strangers in the parking lot for 10 cent each. Or, maybe buy Blue Jay tickets for $40 and resell them for $20. The possibilities are endless.

I think it would be awesome if they let school kids offer to return the carts as, say some type of school fundraiser for a trip or something. I would hand it over every time

Skyrider, as others have said here, that guy expressed what he would've done in your shoes, but note that he didn't expect to receive your parking ticket. He didn't ask. Therein is the distinction my friend. BTW, what was the dollar discount you offered?
