Ah yes, Dominic "2nd Round Pick" Moore.

Traded by the Leafs to the Sabres in 2009 for a 2nd round pick.

Traded by the Panthers to the Canadiens in 2010 for a 2nd round pick.

Traded by the Lightning to the Sharks in 2012 for a 2nd round pick.

Sign this guy as a free agent and at worst you'll get a 2nd for him.

A few observations. First, if this thread is talking about what the Leafs need to do to become real contenders and you have multiple posts talking about Dominic Moore, there is a huge problem.
Second, the implication that players decide how much they're going to ask for in a contract negotiation is probably incorrect in the vast majority of cases. The agent is hired, says to the client that they should try to get as much money as possible, and the client is expected to say no? Of course he will say yes, especially if he is a 22 year old kid.

As the rules on TERB state you cannot dictate who posts what in any thread.
If some clowns want to take the thread in a certain direction there is nothing you can do but ignore and stay on course.

The 2014/15 Leafs have 12 players under NHL contract ... seven(7) forwards, four(4) defensemen and one(1) goalie.

Kessel . $8
Lupul . $5,250
Clarkson . $5,250
van Riemsdyk . $4,250
Bozak . $4,2
Kadri . $2,9(RFA summer '15)
Orr . $.925(FA summer '15)

Total $30,775,000

Phaneuf . $7
Gleason . $4
Gunnarsson . $3,150
Rielly . $.894,167

Total $15,044,167

Bernier . $2,9(RFA summer'15)

Team total $48,719,167(+ bonuses)

Assuming a $71(approx.) limit that leaves about $22,000,000 in Cap room to sign 11 players ... seven(7) forwards, three(3) defensemen and one(1) goalie.
There are no buyouts/retained salary as of this date.

Would Shanahan be tempted to sign free agent,Ryan Miller? His game maybe better suited in the East? Logical choice could be the Canucks, though

As good as Bozak has played with Kessel and JVR, the centre position is still a very weak link in the overall team structure. The dilemma for trading Kadri is that you likely won't get equal or better quality in another young centreman. The wing positions are adequate in comparison, so if significant changes are to be made, Lupul might be a more likely candidate. It never hurt to have more good centres than you need as majority of centres can play wings while majority of wing players can't play centre.

As for the defence, as long as Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Reilly and Gardiner are you top four d's, it will continue to suffer until both young kids blossom into studs. I don't see how they'd trade Reilly and Phaneuf's contract makes him unattractive to most other teams, so I can see one or both of the other 2 can be dealt for some meaningful return.

Okay

Ashton 1 year deal @ $1,000,000 per
Troy Bodie 1 year deal @ $1,050,000 per
Dave Bolland 4 years @ $4,000,000 per

Gardiner 2 year deal @ $2,000,000 per
Ranger 1 year deal at $1,000,000 per or 1 year deal at $900,000 with NTC

Bolland wants more? Look elsewhere, fill your boots Dave!
The others, meh, only top 4D/top 2 line guy is Gardiner, the others are Dime a Dozen players.

$9,050,000 spent, leaving $12,950,000 to spend elsewhere.

Franson wants to return? 1 year @ $2,000,000
McClement to return? 1 year @ $1,600,000
Kulemin to return? 1 year @ $2,800,000
Raymond to return? 2 years @2,000,000

Total expenditure: $8,400,000

Leafs $4,550,000 under the cap

Still need a goaltender, could do worse than Reimer at $2,100,000

Maple Leafs still $2,450,000 under the cap, able to take on salary in trades.

*Leafs are $22,380,833 under the cap, not $22,000,000

Ironhead has mr. Moulson on his wish list. You're not getting him and everyone else you want to keep for $22 mil. that's assuming the cap will be $71 mil. from what I've been reading because of the low Cnd. Dollar the cap could drop to $68 mil.

Alrighty then......back out Franson at $2,000,000 & Reimer at $2,100,000, replace with a Marlie on D, say at $800,00 & a veteran goaltender looking for $1,200,000.
There's $2,100,000 added to the pot, Maple Leafs now $4,500,000 under the cap.

I question the desire for Moulson.....right now the Leafs forwards are like a doughnut. Lots of goodness on the sides but no middle. Money would be better spent on Stastny.
Moulson is 30, already on the downside of his career, Stastny is almost 2 years younger, and plays a position Toronto needs to improve upon.

Agreed. Problem is Stastny will command at least $6 mill. in this market and that's assuming he will want to come to Toronto. There's not a lot of top notch offensive gems available in free agency and that will mean teams will overpay for the decent ones that are available. And Stastny may decide to stay in Colorado as they have the makings of a pretty good team for the future.

No argument here. I don't see the point in continuing to acquire wingers.
Don't spend the money just because you have it. Start the season under the cap and see where things go.

I would love a NHL one or two center, but at what cost ?
A scoring winger would complete the second line as a legit threat, leaving Clarkson to the third line full time where he may be most effective.

I also want to improve the checking line.

WTF for? The one thing the Leafs have is a goaltender.
They need depth. The good teams have players who can move up and down the roster and not look out of place. They also have guys in the press box or A who can step in and not look out of place. The leafs play 1 or 2 forwards short nearly every night because they insist on carrying goons.

:
That's an interesting question.

If you look at the rosters of the better teams, the one similarity is they're all strong in the middle, from the goalie out to the centre position, and a couple of solid two way defence men. The teams with great wingers like Washington and Toronto but weak in the middle always seem to struggle to maintain competitiveness with any consistency. With that in mind, I'd like to see the Leafs focus their search in strengthening their centre position.

The Leafs have Bernier who looks to be the goalie of the present and future. A blue chip prospect in Reilly. The biggest missing ingredient is in the middle. So to establish that "core" that you can build a team that can compete consistently, I'd like to see the Leafs acquiring a young legit no. 1 centre, someone like a Duchesne or MacKinnon. The cost will be high even if one is available, but other than Bernier and Reilly, I'd go all in even if it means including a Kessel or JVR.

Kadri still has some untapped potential and maturity may be what's missing in his development. If Bolland leaves, the Leafs could be looking for more young centres like him than wanting to trade one away.
