Hey, it looked like Nathan Horton is a bust in Columbus this year. Haven't looked into how big was his contract there, but would you trade Clarkson for Horton straight up? Just a change of scenery for the two of them?
Check their contract clauses, virtually undoable.

There have been a lot of talks about the "core group of guys" that this team should be built around. Everyone's list will probably be different but it's safe to say that most would include : the first line, Lupul, Kadri, Phaneuf, Reilly, Gardiner and Bernier. What's yours ?

My list would only include :" the first line, Reilly and Bernier". Of-course no one is untouchable, but every successful team has been built around a "core group" and the Leafs have to start with something.

The group of "Reimer, Phaneuf, Gunarrson, Gardiner, Lupul, Kadri, Kulemin and the fourth line" have been around through recent melt downs. I'm not saying trade everyone of them, but I think this team needs more than just patience and a few tweaks. Either it's the coaching or the core is flawed. Unless Bernier can stand on his head through the next entire season, I don't see how this team with its current core can do much better.

Nonis may have to convince his new boss is that the number of long term contracts with which he just handed out to a 'core group' of players would translate into a consistent playoff team. Basically,Nonis is on a 5 years to 7 years plans if you could even give him that much time to build a respectable team. So,we might see the core 'muskoka 5' stays intact for next season. Then, bring in a whole lot of new supporting casts who know how to backcheck plus how to spell defence!

...just based on talent wise level..would you do it one-for-one? I quite impressed with his plays when he was with the Bruins. But, then again anyone would look good playing under the bruins system...lol!
No .

I don't blame you if you decide to stop being a fan. That's your prerogative. I respect that. I'm sure many have been frustrated enough to have done so; but IMO it's a naive thinking that lobbying others to stop being Leaf fans will have any real impact. If you've lived in TO for any length of time, you'd know it's not gonna happen. That's the reality.

As I said before, I had criticized previous ownership/management on numerous occasions, but the encouraging sign I've see from this current management is that they have done some really positive things with the Raptors and the soccer team. Leiweke has the reputation to be a home run hitter type executive and getting the two soccer stars seems to support that. Getting Drake as a bird dog/spokesperson was a brillian move. Getting Shannahan may or may not work, but at least is an effort in the right direction. Let's give him some time to work his magic. I'm not naive to think that he's doing for the fans; it's all part of a big scheme to put all major sports teams on some kind of TV packages/PayPerView deals, and the first step is to build championship teams. Eventually we'll have to pay for any team success, but its another reality we'll have to face. Until then, we can at least enjoy this much free sports programs as we have today.
My, my, my, how irritable Leaf fans are at this time of the year (make that every year since '67). Maybe I should have let the wounds heal a bit before trying to bring some reality into this place.

I'm a hockey fan, born in Toronto and still live here. I jumped off the Leaf band wagon back in the late 70's and never considered going back. The funny part is, all the arguments about things like the new GM, owner, players, and what potential there is to "better the team", has been identical ever year for more than 4 decades. Same hopes, same comments, just different names and price tags. Unfortunately, many like you have gone to their graves saying the same things. Some were friends of mine trust me.
So you may not like what I'm saying and feel some sort of anger towards me for not being the proud Leaf fan that you are...but I didn't see any "No non-Leaf Fans Allowed" policy on this thread.
In all my arguments here I haven't scrutinized the players...only the organization.
And like I said to another person here...your scrutiny and anger would be better served if directed at MLSE...especially when you buy your next pair of tickets next season at the new shiny price.

Hortons season was lost because of injuries when healthy he was fairly effective. Clarkson was just terrible healthy or not.

What does current(2014) Leaf management(from owners to coaching staff) have to do with the 70s Leafs ?
For that matter 80s or 90s ?

Fixed your post for you.
A true sign of a loser is resorting to name calling. You know, like kids do in the school yard when they have nothing else to say.
Like I said, don't blame me for your discontent just because the truth hurts.
Blame yourself & actually do something about it, you'll feel better in the long run.

 Nicely done.

I got tired of showing how lame your arguments are. Too easy.

You are a troll.
That's all you have? Nothing left in the tank, eh? hmmmmm...who does that remind you of?
Pity.
Just when I thought it started to get interesting.

Don't worry, only about 5 months until you can resume "The Passion That Unites Us All". (saw that on a Leaf promo banner downtown...near a promo poster for a Leafs Scotia Visa card with the caption "How Fans Pay")...perfect. Lol!

As a Sens fan I'm glad we got the win but have to say that your Toronto Maple Leafs didn't even show up tonight.

If they are trying to get RC fired then I would venture they did a great job. It was like they absolutely didn't give a crap.

What was it when then Blackhawks coach Orval Tessier said of his team after a loss once, ''The whole team needs a heart transplant''.

If anything Shanahan should bring some accountability to the franchise and people within hockey operations.

Whether you agreed with his calls on suspensions or not, he had no problem with being accountable for and explaining his decisions via the video approach.

Fact is that Shanahan has no experience in the role he has been hired to fill. Great player on the ice for sure. But zero track record in this area. And aside from being from the area, has no connection to the Leafs in terms of heritage.
For which I conclude that this decision is purely for optics, and timed for when fans pretty much hit rock bottom this year. ie window dressing & fan appeasement.

Now the optimists among you could say that it's just what the organization needed...but he joins a VERY long line of people who came in here with much more experience that failed miserably for one reason or another. That is also a fact.
