Update on the need for a Center:
http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=690356
This makes sense to me, as a quick patch up for short term. Deal for a Center from outside never makes sense RIGHT NOW, when the Leafs are dealing in a weak position, the market is the seller market for any decent Center, better do it this way than give up too much for a quick fix solution. O/c if we slide too much in the standing (knock, knock..) things can change dramatically.

Now try this ... :D

Toronto GP 15, W 10, L 5 OTL 0 ... Pts 20 ... W% .667
Detroit GP 17, W 9, L 5, OTL 3 .. Pts 21 ... W% .618

The Leafs are precentage points ahead of the Wings. :thumb:
Which makes sense. Two games in hand and just one point behind. Leafs are getting more points/game which is basically the same as percentage.

....
These teams are playing at over .500 which is to say they earn more points than the games played
The term ".500 team" is different than it used to be in hockey and different than in any other N. Amer, team sport which was an average, middle of the pack team, in range of a playoff spot.

Not in hockey because with some games being worth 3 points, an average team will get somewhere between 1.1 and 1.2 points per game and a team that is .500 (1 point per game) is in the bottom 1/3 of the league and will never, ever make the playoffs. A .500 team in hockey is now a shit team not an average team. Calling a team a .500 team or aspiring to be .500 is now an insult unless your meaning of ".500 team" is one where a team gets approximately as many points per game as the league average. That number changes from season to season, week to week and even day to day as it is dependent on the number of regulation ties,

Come on, isn't it enough splitting hair ALREADY? I was just trying to make it easier for people like myself, Kathleen to crunch some numbers, on a day-to-day basis. Never a fan of statistical number anyway. Have it your way Shack, I'm enjoying the game as it is: A GAME!

I was agreeing with you in the way you were looking at points earned per game as probably the most accurate means of ranking teams and from that showing how the term ".500 hockey team" now means a very mediocre team.

I don't think you can paint all .500 teams the same brush and call them "shit teams", especially this early in the season.

How they get to .500 should be taken into consideratin - suppose the Leafs lose both Reimer and Bernier (along with Bozak and Bolland) tomorrow and they go 6-14 the next 20 games and get to .500, at that point you get all injuried players back, would you still consider them a "shit team" then ?

Another example is the Rangers, they started the season with a new coach and played something like 9 of the first games on the the road. They went something like 2-8 and since have now climbed back to .500. Do you still consider them a " shit team " ?

I do agree that the current point system does allow mediocre teams to achieve .500 status, but that's exactly what NHL wants, as the fan bases of these teams get something more to cheer their for, false hopes as may be.

The point is that a team that is getting one point per game is not going to make the playoffs, hence they are in the lower echelons of the league.

I understand your points about injuries and the Rangers schedule. They are valid as to how the team has underperformed, but that team as it played on the ice for those games was a poor team. They may indeed play up to their potential at any time, but until they actually do they have been in the lower third of the league.

I do agree that this early in the season lots can change. I was mainly referring to .500 teams as more of a long term trend.

Another weird goal on Bernie, but it does not hurt so much this time.

Kessel scores ! What more can you say about that goal.
I thought he had a very good game.

It was good to see Frazier back.

Last night game was boring because (MHO):

- Leafs came back after a week off, and the embarrassing lost in Van, they are tentative and tight, did not shoot when they might have a chance. Just think of the 4 minute power play c/w 44 sec of 2 man advantage: passing so beautifully but no shooting much.

- Typically Devils' game, boring and checking and checking, there is not much flow to the game. with Schneider in goal they try for the one goal game and then defend kind of hockey.

Shot on goal problem stares at the Leafs in the eyes now: too many shot and sloppy defense resulting in the fluke goal that Bernier "should have" stopped.

What a goal and solo effort from #81, he was splitting all 4 Devils and then beat the goalie with a laser. Wow!

JVR done well, especially scoring the winner.

Now, beat the Bruins and make me a believer (or stronger believer :D) Go Leafs Go!

Devils games are nearly always a snore. It was too bad it had to go to a shoot out. Mind you, The Buds are 2-0 in shootouts this year.

Anyone notice the Kessel slammers are pretty quiet these days. He is more than pulling his weight. Tonight's game will be interesting to see where the Leafs heads are at.

- Never a fan of pre game ceremonies, they seem to always account for slow starts to games.
True, however, I did watch the introduction of the HOFers and wondered if any of the current Leafs will ever be HOF worthy? Is Kessel HOF material?

grant you it was a decent rush. but if you just CHECK the guy, STEP INTO HIM, instead of waving your stick at him, the play,s over.

Easier said than done. Do you really think the 4 Devils are dumber than you? Watch the replay, they tried, but without the speed how do you step INTO Kessel? He was already stepping OVER them in his wake, any effort laterally is less for the catching up to him. His goal will be in the highlight for a while, trust me.

He'll need at least another 10 years with at least 30 goals per. Winning a Stanley Cup or two along the way wouldn't hurt. Please note, I did not specify with which team.

The Leafs defense has been a ship without an anchor with Fraser injured, good to see him back.

Stay at home defensemen are like Rodney Dangerfield, they get no respect. Everyone remembers Bobby Orr but does anyone remember his linemate when the Bruins won their two Stanley Cups in the 70's?
