And yes, I am serious that it was the democratic nature of the United States which ultimately forced an end to a stupid ideologically driven war. You may recall they had a few protests and it ultimately became an election issue.
In the USSR there was no such remedy to Stalin's murderous ideological killing.
And yes I agree that religion and ideology have both been responsible for massive and senseless slaughter. "Kill them all, God will know his own" had a lot on common with Stalin's murderous purges. Same murderous reasoning. Same murderous result.
Anyone who thinks their belief is worth killing people for becomes a menace to everyone else. Stalin is a good example.
