100 page thread. Don't know where to find the discussion of baseball players being pussies for not playing with injuries. Hello Rocky.

Claude Giroux out 5-6 weeks from an injured finger while playing golf? That's even less innocuous than running to first base. And I guess it means he will miss a good chunk of training camp.

What's becoming of playing through minor injuries? After all, it's only a finger. He can still skate and hit and park himself in front of the goalie.

Gibbons has to be let go. That is the code. You lose with a team that is supposed to win, you get fired (right Charlie Manual, Bobby Valentine?). But perhaps more important is a real big league pitching coach and a better hitting coach

Mid 60's pages will find you the playing through injuries dialogue.

Rocky can't help you right now, he's banned.

That list of potential mangers was sarcasm, right? if Sciosia becomes available he would be worth looking at. The others mentioned MEH!
Agree the coaching staff needs an upgrade!

Speaking of managers, why has Girardi done so well with the Yanks when they've played all year without A Rod, Jeter, Granderson, Teixeira. Seems to me his manager skills are quite a bit better than Gibbers. That's the difference between a guy who can manage his players and one who can't. The line up the Yanks have been putting out there all year is made up of other teams castoffs but they still are above .500 that's what a good manager can do for a team.

OK... bottom line... once again!

MANAGEMENT 101: a good manager must inspire his team... he is the glue that binds the individuals together, so that they perform at their level of competence and talent and play together as a team... like the conductor of a symphony orchestra.

This bullshit that the players, not the manager, perform out on the field is just that: bullshit. The conductor is not called upon to play the violin, clarinet or trombones, either!

If that does not make sense to you, then do not pursue a career in management, whatever the field.

If you have seen Gibbons' TV interviews and his after-the-game press conferences, you know without any doubt that the concept and word "inspiration" does not belong in his catalog of talents nor in his dictionary.

The BJ's have been like an orchestra without a conductor all year...

That guy Smith could be the answer....there are dozens of "baseball men" that might fit the bill.

The manager that had the most success with the Blue Jays was Cito, you could fall asleep at his press conferences.
How do you motivate millionaires? These aren't kids trying to impress someone. These are overpaid adults that have to want to win.
This team has a few character guys that bust their butts and show it.
I already said I'm not a Gibbons fan I just don't see anyone out there at the moment that would do a better job. I'm sure the media
will come up with names that deserve consideration but to date there hasn't been a name mentioned that IMHO is any better Gibbons.

Id rather have Gibby than any other manager right now.
What difference would it make if he was high strung? If he sat up straight during press conferences would people like him more?

I used to be a retail manager (different world I know).. but I was pretty good. I was very good at recognizong my employees and could get my mostly university students to show up at 6am any time I needed them because I recognized their efforts in a genuine way... and they did anything I asked them to..... inspiring and encouraging people does not always require showmanship.

Being real to who one is is more effective.

I have no doubt that he leads.... and i have no doubt that he leads in a way that is not for our viewing pleasure.

I don't know wy I trust him but I really do. I guess I relate to his style....

If he threw bases around while arguing with umps, would people think he cared more?

Do we really want that?

The manager is one of many coaches... a leader but really- not responsible for the 2013 jays results.

I value loyalty... I dont know how he could have impacted this team differently ...

We have more than one coach.

Telling our players the obvious will make no impact. Micromanaging is not a positive managerial trait.

I like Gibby- I chose loyalty over a big mouth.

I hate that so many people question him.

This season is not his fault.

Joe Maddon of tampa Bay is probably the best manager in baseball...although Zaun criticized him for walking Lind tonight. The hypothetical question is......if Maddon was our manager, how many more wins would we have? I would say 10.

And we need a better pitching coach and hitting coach

First, 10 more wins would not help. Second, it is just a completely abstract guess. I say 53. Means nothing, other than a pretty good year. Statements as such with absolutely no backup are useless.

How come John Farrell sucked last year and now has his team in 1st place? Did he suddenly become a great manager or does he just have a better team? Managers are overrated.

It was put as a HYPOTHETICAL for discussion and a little fun. My guess is that we would be closer, but I agree not at the top. I don't think we would have started 10-21 with Maddon - I think he would play Davis more - and I don't think he would have batted Bautista second more than once or twice. That is just a humble opinion and totally unprovable.

The impact of a manager on experienced, star players is pretty minimal. Does Gibby really need to teach Josh Johnston how to pitch or Jose Bautista how to hit for average? Not really. Those guys can pretty much help themselves.

The younger players need help; but by and large they've come along nicely in the last few weeks.

Tactical decisions? Well, it's baseball and baseball is inherently unpredictable - far more so than football or hockey. You win some and you lose some.

this is exactly my point. You can go forever with list like this. Buck Showalter is like this. Did he all of a sudden change his manager style. 80% of these manager firings are all about marketing. Charlie Manule who had great years with the Phillies and won a world series was just let go. Did he all of a sudden forget how to manager or change his managerial style?? It's all bull shit marketing
