Police are asking for the public’s help after a man allegedly stole a $26,000 bottle of scotch from an LCBO store on April 7.

Police said the man walked into the LCBO store at 2 Cooper St. at Queens Quay just before 2 p.m. and took a 700 ml bottle of 50-year-old single malt Glenfiddich from a glass case in the store’s vintage section.

The man continued shopping and also chose a bottle of wine. Police said he paid for the wine, but not the scotch. The next day, the scotch was discovered missing. The bottle in one of only 15 in Ontario and 50 in the world, police said.

Police described the suspect as five-foot-ten, between 35 and 45 years old and clean shaven with black framed glasses. He was last seen wearing a brown hat, brown trench coat, black jeans and a Burberry plaid shirt.

I wonder what $26k scotch tastes like? Is he selling shots?

He probably has a (rich) buyer already. Like those art thieves.

They left a $26,000 bottle of scotch on the shelf when they lock up $250 bottles of wine?

Either the LCBO employee forgot to lock the cabinet or did not secure the lock to the cabinet where they keep the higher priced bottles.

Other scenario is, the employee was pre-occupied with a customer and this guy saw an opportunity and took it. At least he took a higher priced bottle and not a Johnny Blue or a XO Cognac.

Or the employee was in on it.

It sounds like he got an employee to hand him the bottle from the cabinet, then he "continued to shop" and at some point slipped the bottle into his pocket.

It's interesting that the LCBO employees remember all his designer clothing. I guess it was something of a con, and he was flaunting designer clothing to persuade them to hand over the bottle.

That would be like letting someone walk around with a $26k watch while they continued to shop. No, it's either they forgot to lock the case or an employee was in on it.

There's a security camera picture of him. That's how they remembered his designer clothing. Notice how his jacket is slung around his shoulder? Dead giveaway that he's a shoplifter.

Here is another possibility: The LCBO has poorly trained and poorly qualified staff.

It's a pretty bad picture when you think of technology these days. You wouldn't think the LCBO would try to save your money by choosing inferior security surveillance equipment.
