i'm looking for advice.

a guy i can't stand died. i am not even remotely upset over that. my mom is the executor of his estate. he has a dog and my mom asked me to handle it. the dog is 19-20 year old hound. it is very over weight and has severe arthritis in every joint. i know the right thing is to put the dog down but i am struggling with that.

what would you guys do ?

You know what you have to do. Just make sure the dog is comfortable until the time comes.

i was kinda hoping someone would say they wanted him so i didn't have to put him down. i would take him with me in the truck but far to old to be getting around in there. i posted this in a few other places as well.

Sorry I can't help. I was going to get a dog from the local shelter but seeing as I'm hardly ever home (during the week anyway) I wouldn't be able to look after it the way it needs. I just felt it would be selfish on my part to get a dog at this time in my life.

i messaged a couple of rescues and whatnot. they all seem to say the same thing. i don't know why i am struggling with it so much.

One of the tragedies of a death can be pets left behind.

In this case simon it appears the owner didn't have the courage or the ability to do the right thing.


Simon the right thing thing here if the animal life is filled with pain is to put it too sleep. The cost doesn't matter. All that matters is that you will be doing a kindness with this action. The kindness that the owner didn't do. This is one of those moments when being an adult sucks. Take the animal to a vet. Stay with it. Comfort it till the end.
A piece of advice I read once might help.

If you ever can't figure out what is the right thing to do.....

Its usually the toughest.

There are some great places that offer palliative care for dogs. At least the poor guy can have some caring, especially if he is suffering. PM me if you want more info...

I would be suprised if any animal shelter would take such an old dog with health issues
If I was me, I would treat the dog wonderfully for a week or so, and then have it put down at a vet's

You are struggling withit because you value life simon. All that says to me is you are a good person. With a horrible task.

the owner had no idea what love was but in his own twisted way loved the dog. he never did the right thing for anyone but himself. drank himself to death literally. he is better off dead.

Don't try to do it yourself simon. A vet will be able to do it quickly and without any pain. They will also take care of the remains. It will be a few hundred bucks but the money doesn't matter. The maoney could maybe even come from the estate. As a part of "cleaning up" the deaceased house. Please go to the vet. It is a living creature. Do this the right way.
