Sometimes the system does work. A grand jury will be called to look at others in Stupidville involved, glad to se this.
I think the sentences were too light. I mean, minimum two tears for one and minimum one year for the other? And I thought our justice system was messed up. They should have been tried as adults, serve time in juvey until they turn 18 and then ship them off to the pen.
From what I have read, the case is a long way from clear cut.
The victim in all of this had changed her story several times. She had also been drinking excessively and had no real recollection of the events. No-one poured the booze into her, she did this of her own accord.
The whole situation was out of control. Excessive drinking, partying, 16 year old kids who have poor judgment. It's a recipe for disaster.
If I had a 16 year old son, I'd use this case as a very stern warning to him - "look son, whether you like it or not, our society is FULL of double standards and you mess with a girl, a drunk girl, or a stoned girl - and you think just because she didn't say no that you're ok to fuck around with her, look and see what can and will happen to you."
If it was a 16 year old boy who got drunk and a couple of drunk girls pulled his pants down and started fondling his penis, nothing would have happened to the girls, but because it's a young girl being messed with - it makes international headlines. Such is the double standard that exists between men and women in our society. (I'm guilty of it myself. When I hear about these hot 30 something teachers having sex with their 16 year old students, I snicker and I say, "lucky bastard", but yet when it happens to a 16 year old girl, it's a different story.)

There are also shades of Penn State in this case. Talks of a cover-up to protect the football team and its players. The girl's family has also hired a civil litigation lawyer.
I saw the family's lawyer interviewed on CNN just after the verdicts came down. He said that the family is deeply religious and would have forgiven the culprits if they had shown remorse and apologized soon after the incident. Of course, this is all conjecture now.
If that happened to my daughter, I would want Luca Brazzi to go have a "word" or two with them.
The two will carry the weight of the label of 'registered sex offender' for the rest of their life and be in the public record as such for all to see. The fact they are 16 and 17 also means that will be for a long long long time after they get out of jail.

True but in my opinion justice would have been better served with longer sentences and prison time after juvey. Set an a example for future would-be teenaged rapists. Good to know they're going on the sex offender registry, I wasn't sure if that would happen due to the age of the boys.
I just hope that all three parties learn from this terrible incident. It is not always easy but try your best to drink responsibly. Unfortunately I don't think this will be the last we will hear of such a case. When alcohol is involved with hormones and weakened inhibitions things get ugly. I hope the girl can move on with her life and be happy. I hope the boys will not behave in this way again.
What does the victim need to learn, how not to get raped?
It is not a woman's responsibility to not get raped.
It is the attacker's responsibility to not assault her.
