The culprit in that Alberta case also said it was an "accident". He was driving DUI and hit another car with 5 teenagers (4 died and 1 seriously injured). Looks like 3 years jail and 3 years probation is the penalty.
Seemingly it is Canadian sentencing. In other jurisdictions a six year sentence all but three suspended for an Aggravated DUI or Vehicular Manslaughter case with four counts would indeed be considered a low end sentence, indeed it could be up to a decade in some jurisdictions.

Well, they would also be hit with a civil suit and the statutory auto insurance will decline coverage almost certainly. So there would be a massive civil liability. For a first offence vehicular manslaughter, I think 3 years makes the necessary point and anything else would be overkill. I mean, no amount of years is going to bring back the victims to life.

What about suspension of Drivers License? That would be mandatorily suspended for a decade in these parts for a DUI/OUI/DWI causing a fatality.

I think he was able to plea bargain away the DUI. The families of the victims think the prosecutor is working for the culprit.

Facts in the Grande Prairie case.
Sentences in vehicular homicide cases are really lenient. There was another case not long ago, also out West, driver ran a stop sign and killed 2 people. I think all he got was a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign.

P.S John Tobin also got 3 years for killing his friend.

Thank you.

It sounds like the Crown was concerned about the jury getting mislead, about (to steal a term from civil law) there being a contributory negligence element with the victims' U-turn and hence decided to go with the plea with sentencing recommendation.

Bail is to determine flight risk, not a time for the crown to submit key evidence like that if it exists.
Strength of the Crown's case is important at bail hearings, both to determine the likelihood of flight and also the "optics" of letting an obviously guilty guy wander the streets or a probably innocent man rot in jail.

True, but don't you think if you had that evidence you would have presented it to avoid him getting bail?
Thats kinda what I was thinking too, you really want someone walking the streets who's allegedly just bashed in some girl's skull with a cricket bat?!

SA is one of the most dangerous nations on Earth. Violent death is a familiar fact of life there. Few seem interested. But one beauty queen seeking to further her career by marrying an Olympic amputee is murdered and that draws worldwide attention. Good on all of you.

Now that the trial is getting closer - crime photos have leaked out:

The bullet marks are visible and labelled. The bullet holes are totally normal height if you are standing and shooting. According to Pistorius, he actually shot these holes after dragging himself in the bathroom without his legs.

They would like to think she slipped and bumped her head ? It is a cold hard reality of what Pistorius did.

BTW: Now I read that the holes are consistent if he stood on his stumps ... I hope they look at more than the holes. Even if it was manslaughter - it's hard to believe that another sports figure could walk because of their fame.
