I haven't followed the news lately.

Were drugs found in his blood?
What about the victim's blood?

Alcohol?

I get the impression that homeowners in South Africa are armed to the teeth. Are there any statistics on how many actual intruders are killed vs how many innocent household members are "accidentally" killed?

I get around.
It bothers me that OP's supporters in that article keep saying that what happened was an "accident", even a tragic one. Firing 4 bullets into a door trying to hit an unseen and unknown person is a very deliberate action.

Heard on the radio this morning that Oscar's brother, Carl, will also be going to trial for causing the death of a woman (a motorcyclist).

Apparently, Carl's case will go to court first. It will be quite a Summer for the Pistorius family and their victims.

No newspaper is completely credible without fail. Further this entire thread is merely speculation, we haven't heard or seen all the evidence.
Aardy, if the Crown had firm evidence to support extensive beating before RS was shot, surely to shit they would have led it at the bail hearing.

This ^

I highly doubt he bashed her head in with a cricket bat. If he did, he's guilty as hell of murder

On that point I agree, however, as really we have both posted this entire thread is merely speculation, we haven't heard or seen all the evidence. Further, I linked the article for Alan Dershowitz's comments rather than for the Cricket bat first half of the article.

What's got 2 legs and kills women?

The Pistorius brothers.
In fairness the charge against Carl Pistorius, the Culpable Homicide charge of Unlawful, Negligent Killing, would be more familiar to us as Vehicular Manslaughter a type of Involuntary Manslaughter - e.g. the death was caused by negligence rather than with malice of forethought.

Yes, but wasn't it you (or was it someone else) who said "dead is dead" in the recent WW II thread?

It might have been I don't recall.

Yes, if it is your family member or loved one who is dead, nothing takes that away.

From the point of view of the Law, which of course reflects society, however, it does make a difference whether you deliberately murdered someone, or whether it was your negligence that killed them (for instance were tuning the radio or looking for a map when you struck them) and whether that negligence was serious enough that you should be charged.

I wonder about whether our society would think that 3 years in jail and 3 years probation is "justice" when someone kills 4 young people and seriously injures a 5th. Current true case from Western Canada.

My good friend, my JOKE did not say murder. The specific word was "kills".

If that is what the Judge, well informed of the facts of that particular case, has determined, I'll go with his judgement over yours derive from your cursory knowledge.

The culprit in that Alberta case also said it was an "accident". He was driving DUI and hit another car with 5 teenagers (4 died and 1 seriously injured). Looks like 3 years jail and 3 years probation is the penalty.
