Frankcastle I think when transactions like this occur it's more of a team taking 2.8 million dollars off another team and to make the salary's match a draft pic has to be put in the trade ( cause Raps taking no player or salary back ) . Heck the draft pic year isn't even determined which makes this pic even more obsecure . I will never understand this part of the NBA ? ie When Nash is traded to Lakers and the salary is 27 million ( 3 yrs ) and to make trade match a couple of draft pics are exchanged .
Picks have nothing do with the match. Zero.
The Nash deal was completed with a Traded Player Exemption the Lakers had. The Lakers received a TPE in the Lamar Odom deal that was completed right before last season. The Lakers gave up salary without taking any back, and were granted a TPE equal to the Odon salary. The TPE is good for 12 monhts, and allows you take back one player up to the amount of the exemption.
If the Lakers did not have the TPE, they would have had no way to acquire Nash unless the Suns were willing to take salary back that was within 125% of Nash's new contract.
The reason the Suns got all the picks is they still had leverage. The only way Nash could go to the Lakers was through a sign and trade for the TPE. Suns were not going to play a friendly for the Lakers wihthout at least getting some value.
The reason the Raptors received less for Bosh is that the Raptors had much less leverage. The Heat had cleared so much cap space last offseason, that Bosh could have signed with the Heat with free cap space -- making a sign and trade unnecessary. Only reason for the sign and trade was that he could get an extra year from the Raptors. So there was reason for the SnT but if BC did not want to co-operate Bosh could have simply told him to fuck off. The Suns and Nash were not in the same position.
The Johnson deal has nothing to do with either scenario above - he is not a free agent ,,, Simply put the Kings have cap space available and did not have to offer salary back in a deal.
