Do the Leafs have a number 1 defenseman?
Of course they do. It is the guy who the coaches think is number one. Phaneuf is getting number one minutes(I have not checked lately) so he would be the Leafs number one D. Would he be considered a number one anywhere else ? Likely answer right now is no.
Burke and co. made huge error naming Phaneuf 'C'. I know what he, Burke, was thinking, but Phaneuf did not need that and in this market, the way the Leafs have played the past few seasons ... huge mistake.

Well put Ironhead. Phaneuf doesn't possess the best material for being a captain, but Burkie didn't have much to choose from, they lack depth in many ways and this is one.

He had another choice, no captain. Hang on to the C until someone takes ownership, to date no one has. Unfortunately, it is easier to make the call in hind sight as I don't remember much, if any negative reaction, when he was handed Phaneuf the C. Unless Phaneuf is traded or decides he doesn't want the C he will be the captain. Pretty damn hard to take the C away without making things worse than they already are.

In Burke's defense, Phaneuf was the best of the lot.

No doubt, but they could have gone without a Captain, the Leafs have done that in the past.
Burke rolled the dice hoping to revive Phaneuf's career in a new environment, naming him Captain of the Leafs was not a good idea.

I don't think they wanted to do that again. After Sundin they went that route and imo Burke had to show that he has turned things around, so giving Dion the "C" gives all the illusion that things are looking up.

The Sabres are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. Wonder if the Leafs will ice their "A" team to-night?

From the NHL Rulebook.

78.5 Disallowed Goals – Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public Address Announcer for the following reasons:

(v) When an attacking player has interfered with a goalkeeper in his goal crease.

(ix) When a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net together with the puck after making a save.

What a clusterfuck of a game.

Tanknation needed a regulation loss tonight.

Both those goals had an aroma to them, especially the second one.

To be honest, he didn't have possession of the puck when his pad got pushed into the net.

I totally disagree with Kipper, Scott Morrision and Doug Mclean that the Ref did fine on the call.
I think Kypreos is a good analyst, but he is overly concerned with being labeled homer, as is the reporter goof. As for the idiot McLean, whose only claim to fame is he drafted Nash, has it in for Toronto. He, McLean, never wants to linger to long on the subject if the Leafs win and played well, but if the Leafs lose and/or did not play well, then he has all the hours of the day to talk about it.

We have so much money tied up, we can't really do anything with this team. The sad part is, our core isn't even good. Grabovski getting paid like an elite center, just wtf.
