Also that is Marchand's game. He plays to bother opponents, to get under their skin. He is getting them to do exactly what he wants, get them off their game.
That's his game, absolutely! Agitators that can play hockey are in demand, this kid has certainly done well for himself for such a short time in the league.

Kathleen, you don't have to have depth of hockey knowledge to be a lover of the game. Your insight actually shows you know more about the game than you give yourself credit for. :)

Gustasson(sp) just got nailed by a shot in practice. Won't play to-night. Why can't the Leafs shoot that hard against opposing goalies?

Let's make it official. Toronto Maple Leafs 2011-12. Rest in peace.

I can't watch them anymore. It is like watching a man struggling in quicksand. You know there won't be a happy ending.

Damn straight. There's nothing else to play for this season, maybe Kessel getting 40.

As for the 4 1st rounders offered to Burke at the trade deadline, he even mentioned it on an interview on the FAN the day after. Dreger reported it deadline day, with 3 firm offers of 2012 1st rounders for Schenn, Kulemin & Grabovski, with a conditional 1st for McArthur. Shit, I would've done all four in a heartbeat, especially McArthur.

IF Burke was offered a first rounder straight up for any of the above 4 and he didn't take it, he should be fired. Somehow, I would think Gardiner should be on that list, in fact he would have been at top of mine

I have to say, now that it is over and things have gone so bad, that I would consider trading some of those four players.
Gardiner ? I would not, nor are the Leafs/Burke even thinking about it. I would not trade him for a 2012 pick, at least not just any 2012 pick, it would have to be a top five and blue chipper. I would consider a lottery 2013 pick plus something.

seems like leafs have trouble with classic bruiser teams like boston and philadelphia.
I do not see that as much of a problem next season. The Leafs should more resemble those teams then this year's Leafs. Burke and Carlyle are both cut of the same cloth. They both like tough teams.

Ironhead I agree, Gardiner may be the only untouchable on the team. I was saying( or trying to) as an opposing GM, Gardiner would have been the first Leaf I would have offered a #1 for.
I have trouble believing teams would offer a #1 for Kulemin or MacArthur. I like Schenn but with the year he has had a #1 seems a bit of a stretch there too.

I see.

As for the four players ... I can still easily see it. I seriously doubt we are talking clear non-playoff teams here. A team wanting to pick up a bit of scoring just before the playoffs, like ST.Louis for instance, what are we talking about ... the 28-30th pick for MacArthur ? Yes. Get a big guy who is not afraid like Kulemin, bonus if he regains some of his scoring. A stay-at-home rugged defenceman like Schenn ?
Also the team getting the player is likely thinking long term, Schenn, Kulemin, etc will resign with them. On a team where there are other top players, these guys can just go out and play their game.

Wow. Could not disagree more. Garndiner has potential. Every other Leaf is a dime a dozen player.

I think you misunderstand my message.
I would not trade Gardiner. I would keep him as a player to build around ... but IF a team were to offer a top three pick in a loaded draft year, and said team was going to include a blue chipper I would, if I were the Leaf GM, have to consider it.

Leafs snap home losing streak. Buffalo missing half their starting defense didn't hurt.
Saw things from Kessel last night that I liked. He really wanted the win and hustled like hell in the dying minutes.
Some nice saves from Scrivens
The more I watch Phaneuf the more I'm convinced he has to go, he sure is not their #1 defense man. How do you unload
that contract?

Was away for weekend so I did not see anything.
Leafs won ! Yeah ! lol

Doubt the Leafs can unload the Phaneuf contract now. Burke gambled that a change of scenery may get Phaneuf back to the player he was, but big mistake was made putting the 'C' on him. Too much pressure to come all the way back in so short a time. The gamble may not have been as big a clusster-fuck if he just brought Dion in and let him play 3/4 minutes.
Put the 'C' on someone else or just go without for a season or two would have been much better.

Do the Leafs have a number 1 defenseman?
IMHO their best defence man is Gardiner, but because of his inexperience I don't think he would be considered a number 1. Phaneuf was regarded as the #1. but from his play he doesn't deserve that status. There just doesn't seem to be a go to guy on defense that can shut the other team down or control the game tempo. So my answer to your question would be NO!
