Being filthy rich means you can have everything how you like it to be.

Sure it be great to tear down every house over 5--10 years old and build brand new--forget installing new windows in the old walls, build it all brand new.

A lot of narrow minded people on this board. Demolishing of homes sitting on multi million dollar properties happens every day in all parts of the world. Look in your own back yard of Toronto, it happens all the time. I'm surprised, actually shocked, that some of you have not noticed this in TO and think it's a waste of money, actually in virtually all cases they do it to make money. Bridlepath, Forst Hill, Rosedale, Kingsway, Hoggs Hollow, etc....., happens each day in these areas. People with this kind of money can afford to knock a home down and build whatever they wish because they really like the location of the land.

I'm well aware that this happens a lot. I actually have a friend who live on the Bridle path and I've seen first hand what people do. I also agree that people can do what ever they want with there money. It's there money, right? They earned it (hard work, inheritance or hooker-ed themselves out). But, I have to right to feel discussed that someone would "waste money" in such a manner. And I think the general public would feel the same way (More so in the US). Especially when you have high unemployment rates across the board. People foreclosing their house's. People struggling to provide the basics for there families.
Imagine you have someone who's been struggling to find work for the past 2 + years with no luck (Many cases like this). How do you think that person would feel after hearing such a story?

I also agree that people can do what ever they want with there money. It's there money, right? They earned it (hard work, inheritance or hooker-ed themselves out). Actually, I think that they'd be pretty happy.

If she just moved in, what, she'd need a gardiner and maybe a part time handy man and couple of maids.

Now she's going to need architects, engineers, CAD operators, and a full construction team.

She's contributing the economy. So god bless her.

In fact why not have a new tax on savings ? Anything say over $1 million gets tax each year. 1 million gets a 5% tax each year. After 10 million tax goes up to 10% after 100 million tax is say 20%

This way the fat cats be more incline to spend their money then accumulate wealth.

Even if you confiscate the assests of everyone in the top five percent, you still have the poor and now you have no one to invest capital. Look at the realities of the former Soviet state Thomas Hobbes' famous quotation about life being "Nasty, brutish and short" applies quite well to the vast majority of peoples lives there between 1918 and 1991.

Probably true. There aren't enough rich people to tax/redistribute their wealth to eradicate poverty.

If she were to just bank it, the banks would use that to lend to others who would buy homes, or build gleaming towers, etc. etc. etc.

But, here are the (grander, social) issues I have:

1. The "jobs" she's creating are service sector jobs (same as the other rich who make such lavish purchases).

If she bought a company that performs energy research, or medical research, or something that advances technology, that's different.

2. What did she do to earn that money? Heckuva role model for the younger folk.

The house will require a huge amount of material - everything from concrete to Canadian timber, to drywall, to wires, to pipes, etc. etc. These would not be "service jobs"

In North America there are 4 primary industries that I can see.

1. Housing
2. Farming
3. Mining and Resources
4. Automobile

If any ONE of them is sick, the entire economy is sick.
