I know a few people in Deer Search who carry side arms and will use them to finish the kill if needed.

Could be done just as easily with the rifle they're already carrying, the sidearm is superfluous. In fact unless it's a .45 I would worry that the sidearm isn't powerful enough to do the job.

I hit a deer once and it totaled my front end.

Who said anything about carrying them? You are 5 times more likely to be killed by someone you know with a gun than by a stranger. Then factor in all the shootings by accident, all the shootings by suicide, all the shootings simply because a gun was handy at the time. A family friend of mine shot his friend by accident when he was 8 years old, the three of us were all the same age. If I had been there that day it could have just as easily been me. The other boy was killed instantly. It completely destroyed the family's lives.
