Tips for Buying an iPhone?

I got one and am very happy with it. Yes my monthly bill is roughly $100 a month but I use about 2GB surfing, emailing, watching crap on youtube, and of course TERB. I'm under a 6GB data plan but have no way of getting close to that unless they start streaming movies.

What I did is buy one from Ebay for a little off the list price sold at Rogers etc, went and got the 7 11 pay as you go phone, took the sim card from that phone and put it in the IPhone and like a previous poster above, voila a pay as you go Iphone!!! But of course you will need wi fi but come on thats available in many many places these days, Starbucks, Second Cup, public libraries etc.

You asked about Iphones and others (including myself) are giving you advice as to what's good, and bad about them as well as alternatives. If you want to go out and take the IPHONE advice and buy a CHINESE knockoff for $99.00 be my guest. Just don't come back here whining because it's NOT an iphone (though it looks like one).
Sorry, but you CANNOT buy a genuine IPHONE new, for $99.00 in Canada. If you could? Why the hell would anyone buy one from Rogers, Fido, Telus etc? Think about it.
A word of advice? If you're going to get snippy about what advice you're given, maybe you should be more specific in your oringal post. Maybe include things like: I don't want to hear about anything other than an iphone, I don't want to know what's bad about them, I don't want anyone to give me their experience with other options, I don't want to hear about scams, etc.
and the thing most lemmings don't realize is that while Iphone was the first, it isn't the ONLY electronic utility device. There are many alternatives to the Iphone, some better, some not as good, but they are there none the less. I can't remember who it is but Nokia is suing someone (I believe it is apple) for copyright infringement. Seems they Purchased Nokia technology only forgot to pay for it........

You'll love Maps too, if you're stuck somewhere up north in the boondogs looking for a beer store, all you have to do is punch in 'brewers retail' or 'beer store' and up pops a dozen locations or so
only if you have access to the server. I believe an Iphone (and all gps enabled phones) is GPRS which uses the cell towers as locators. If you don't have service, you won't have GPS. I know someone who can't use his Iphone 5 miles outside of huntsville due to lack of service but bell phones work.Go for it Elfie, you wont be disappointed. That's not what you said in the original post, you specifically said "you're THINKING of buying an iphone"......so what are you asking? And this isn't a debate, you asked for tips, reccommendations and we gave them to you.

If you work for a big employer, as for the EPP (Employee Purchase Plan). Red Flag Deals <dot> com may have some nice specials worth investigating.
I maxed out and got the 32 Gb one so I don't carry an MP3 player any more. I use apps to sync things with online servers (evernote, dropbox) in order to keep files, memos, thoughts and photos synced and in order. I rarely game, unless taking a dump, and there is no signal.
I guarantee you wont be disappointed when you do buy an iPhone.
CellPhone snobs like Tboy will tear them apart, but if you're a regular phone user like most people you will LOVE the iPhone.
Also the typing field like others referred to isnt nearly as bad as they say. You get used to the small letters after a while.

Funny how he mentioned Windows Mobile as a viable alternative to the iPhone. Windows Mobile 7 is due out soon and MS is copying the iPhone experience like a xerox machine.

How long did it take you? I spent 30 minutes playing with a buddy's iphone, strictly typing emails, and could not make it work. The BB, even the Pearl, lets me smoke through emails at very fast speeds but with the iphone I was stymied, and can't buy one for that reason. The difference for me is the ability to feel the buttons while I'm looking at them, so I know my finger is where I think it is. (cough, lol).
Is there a way to turn the keyboard 90 degrees so you are typing on a larger surface? Is there a way to turn off the "pop up" feature that causes the letters to, well, pop up when you tap them. I found that slowed me down and annoyed me quite a bit. Grr. Other than that I would love to get one, but most of my smartphone time is typing.
Have you been with the Rogers for their wireless phone service?
I would strongly suggest calling their retention department for better monthly rates/credits etc...

You raise an excellent point, and thats why I said an iPhone is more for regular phone users. Not so much for hardcore business people that send/receive hundreds of e-mails a day.
I only use my email a few times a day, so the typing is not really an issue.
It took me a few days to be extremely proficient. There are free apps that help you improve your typing as well.

As for me being a cell snob, give your head a shake Sammy, a snob is one who jumps on the bandwagon and gets an Iphone (simply BECAUSE it's an apple product) without considering all the options. Anyone who does that is a bonehead.
As for touch screens vs keypads, the thing I find with touchscreens is that my fingers are too big for even the largest touchscreen buttons. I have to use my fingernail(s). A lot of people use the two thumb method but there's no way I could, I'd mistype every word. My HTC touch comes with a stylus and while it makes it a lot easier, it is only one handed.
Actually, in addition to windows mobile I also mentioned android. I don't care what the OS is as long as it does the job.
BTW: I'm still waiting for the link to $99.00 iphones with no contract......
Three?I know this is TERB - however I don't understand such hostility at a seemingly innocent question about phones. Good grief.
In any case, I bought three iPhones a few months ago and LOVE them. Everything I wanted and more. (The only thing I miss is emoticons, but I can live with that).
<Caveat: I am not, nor have I ever been, an Apple disciple/drone>

You are wrong.
It uses cell towers to assist in faster connections with various apps. It does have pure GPS though. I use a third party GPS software and it does not use a-gps, so it takes a fair bit longer to connect than google maps does as it's purely sattelite connections.
