you can only run iPhone apps on an iPhone ... you think Apple would have it any other way?

That's one of the features of Android. It's free and open source, so you could have multiple hardware manufacturers (HTC, Motorola).
But the problem with that is a lot of buggy apps since Droid doesnt verify all the software

I mean, there are a LOT of bs apps out there. For eg: I downloaded a valentines hottie detector (phone beeps then when you get close to a chick, you hit a button and it beeps faster and faster). Kind of lame but I wanted to know what it was.

There are apps like song identifier where you hold your phone to the source of the song and it searches and comes up with the name. *rollseyes*. Now THAT'S an important app! Life or death....
then a friend of mine has a laugh app. When you shake the phone you hear laughter. Shake it harder, the laughter gets louder. Just what everyone needs.

One AWESOME app for android phones is the "I park". You click the phone when you get outta your car and when it's time to go, you hit return and it guides you back to your car. (kind of like a reverse gps). Now I pay attention to where I parked but with rows upon rows upon rows all looking the same, or like one time I parked at pearson, when on a business trip for 2 weeks, when I got back I had no fricken idea where my car was. I hit the horn button, heard the thing honking, STILL couldn't find it cause it ended up being 2 floors up lol and the horn was echoing all over the place.....I remember someone saying: you looking for your car? I think it's over here, no wait, over there, then someone else, hey it's over here, nope, there? nope....it was FUNNY lol....

There are many MANY other smart phones out there that will do everything you want and do it extremely well.......
is there a phone that has:
physical qwerty,
3mp+ camera,
decent size screen for web surfing,
and would remember and list incoming names as per call display (not what's in your phone book but what the display shows; Iphone DOES NOT do that)

?

How big do you consider "decent"? 2.3"? 3,2"???

Not sure of the screen sizes but
don't all blackberrys have full qwerty keyboards?, (except for the storm which is a touch screen)
Nokia N97
LG Xenon (as much as I hate LG products)
LG Eve
Motorola Milestone
HTC Touch Pro2
HTC Touch Pro
SOny Ericsson X1 (has a 3" screen)

I've owned nothing but smart phones of various makes since 2004. I wouldn't own anything else. Like you I dislike Apple as a company and the my shit don't stink attitude of apple users. But, I did get an iPhone last year and I have to say it's freaking awesome. Yes, there are things I don't like about it. I didn't like the lack of a keyboard, but I got used to the on screen one and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. The lack of a replaceable battery is a big downer and the camera is garbage (it's actually pretty good in daylight, but it sucks in low light at the lack of a flash really hurts it. My last nokia phone had a camera/flash as good as my normal digital camera). I also really dislike the way that Apple make is so hard to customize it and the worst think of all is the iTunes software which above all else would give me reason to switch to another phone.
I never had any intention of buying a regular mac computer and owning the iphone has solidified that, once a decent alternative comes in the next year or two I will probably switch away from the iphone.

That said, it IS an amazing phone. It really is. No other phone has close to the amount of software that the iphone does. Yes there's lots of shit to wade through but there's a good or excellent app to do just about anything you can imagine on it. Give it a try, a real try before you slag it off.

I had mine jail broken and I really didnt get what the big deal was? First of all the problems I could never turn the phone off, if I ever did the Itunes plug in symbol would come up telling me to restore, so I had to plug it in and run Purple Rain again!!! also most of the apps in Cydia didnt impress me, nothing comes close to even what the Apps store has.

It's the tweaks rather than the apps that make it worthwhile. I jailbroke pretty much for one reason alone. Lock Calendar (a standard feature on Nokia phones). But there's lots of other little tweaks I use that are very handy too.

Glad you like it and glad you realize it isn't the be all to end all in phones. Yeah, I have heard nothing good about itunes, almost as if it was written by someone who worked for microsoft? lol....

I have used it but really, I want a PHONE first and foremost that when it dies, I don't lose my contacts (which I have, oh 10 times) and hate to manually type them in each and every time. Next in line is texting because I have clients that ONLY communicate via text. Third? Maybe gps, but I needed to find a place this week and forgot I had it on my phone, so I pulled out my rand mcnally book lol.

It's funny, people who know me look at me with a smart phone and say: HEY you HATE those fricken things!!! I said yeah I do, but hey, I have to due to clients. One thing I DO not want is a computer in my pocket. If I have to use one, I have one at home. Though, I've had to get a hotel room a few times a month and it is kind of handy to pass the time when you're bored.

As to their fragility: I can attest to that. I've dropped my HTC touch any number of times and it just bounces away. My co-worker dropped his once and the screen is shattered. $300.00 to fix. Will I eventually break mine? Probably. But at $100.00 BFD.

I now use Nokia E75, which is not too bad, but it does not keep the incoming callers list, which I hate. Neither I think do HTCs, and also they seem to have bad reception... I don't know about the other ones

You can do an iphone cheap.

Buy one secondhand on craigslist.
Put in a pay as you go sim card.

Then run it with no data (its not as nice, but if you're near places with free wifi its not bad).
That's the way I did it.
Phone was only a few hundred jailbroken, and now costs only about $20/month to run.

Wow..... good points...

I will add. iPhone 3G is only $99 brand new, and you can jailbreak it yourself.... iPhone 3GS is $199.

on craigslist you can buy a real iphone, without a contract, 3G, for a few hundred dollars.
3GS is about double.

You do have to be careful, but you can buy a real, working, unlocked phone this way.
No contract.

Oh, and people forget, the real difference between an iphone and most smart phones is that an iphone is really an electronic utility device.
You can find apps for just about everything there, from GPS to skype to .....
I've replaced 3 other gizmos I used to carry around with me with this phone.
