You are wrong.
It uses cell towers to assist in faster connections with various apps. It does have pure GPS though. I use a third party GPS software and it does not use a-gps, so it takes a fair bit longer to connect than google maps does as it's purely sattelite connections.
Ok, so I wasn't exactly correct, and since I said "I believe" I wasn't entirely wrong........So, moral of the story is: you might be able to use your iphones for locating the beer store up north....but not very quickly due to satellite signal issues. That will help immensely if you're doing turn by turn: turn left 100 yds behind you lol........

But still: 5 miles outside Huntsville you can't use it......how many other places can't you?

(for the record I was WRONG about GPRS, it doesn't use GPRS, it uses A GPS, mixed up the acronyms)

I know this is TERB - however I don't understand such hostility at a seemingly innocent question about phones. Good grief. :D
It's caused by the hatred some people have for anything Apple. They see the logo and they're foaming at the mouth.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!..it's the "anti Apple" bandwagon crap as usual!...usually from "experts" that have NEVER used any Apple product by the way! (so f*cking boring)

Naw, just gets my ire up when someone asks "for tips and reccommendations" then gets all snippy because they didn't get THE tips and reccommendations they thought they would.......kind of like a customer of mine: he asked a question, didn't like the answer, so he got all pissed off. I don't make up the rules, I just play by them......

Actually med, if you're referring to me, I HAVE used quite a few apple products and found them to be irritating to say the least. Coupled with many issues apple users say they don't have, just makes me believe even more than people buy into the hype.

I mean seriously: when an APPLE customer says they have a RELATIONSHIP with their computer, well, that says a LOT.

But then again, I harp on anyone who is a lemming and jumps on the bandwagon simply because of the hype. Or lines up at 3 am to BUY a product, well.....for eg: I was at loblaws yesterday and there were people lined up at the BBQ counter 20 or so deep. I thought "wtf are they GIVING away roast chickens"? Nope. Wings were on sale: 30 for $10.00. HOLY crap, people are lining up for 30 minutes to BUY 33 cent wings? SMACK......

Personally...I'm getting closer to giving the Iphone a try...but one short coming, no flash...so great for outdoor pics and vids but nothing indoors! Seems a strange thing not to have on the phone.
Also a question for the users...on my bb I have a "safe"...place I can lock away confidential info...does anything like this exist on the Iphone?
Cheers...

I am not a Apple zombie and I have always prefered and owned PCs. That being said I love my iPhone 3Gs and it is the best phone I have ever owned. I do some texting, emailing and posting on terb and really don't have a problem. The landscape typing makes it alot better than the original set-up. The autocorrect is pretty helpful. I owned an HTC Touch and the iPhone does things so much better. I also now have a BB Curve from work and I have not gotten used to the small keyboard and prefer the typing on the iPhone.

Do you mean spelling autocorrect? This alone is worth the price of admission.
BTW...very timely thread Keebler as I'm also in the market for a "smart" phone! Thanks!

I have to say: the HTC touch isn't the greatest. But for $100.00 with no contract? Can't argue with the price. Comparatively speaking an Iphone would have cost $400.00 or more. So let's compare apples (pun intended lol) to apples: compare the Iphone to another $600 - 900.00 phone. There are some pretty amazing android phones out there.

Comparitively speaking: comparing the Iphone to an HTC touch is like comparing a ferrari to a ford focus. Just doesn't compare.

Most if not all smart phones have auto correct.......my $100.00 HTC has it......(only thing is the autocorrect sometimes corrects to the wrong word). You might also like the auto fill function: where you start typing and it completes the word for you but again, it often completes the wrong word. That's the same as T9 text: I have yet to be able to use that.

For eg: I want to type: I'll see you at the mall at eight. It will want to type " Instance sell young attach the malformed attractive easy"........

Good info, thanks...I never heard about this feature, but still goes to show...the "human" has to be in control. :)

Since I have a third party GPS software it works anywhere.
Have you tried it? Not saying it doesn't but there is a difference between "should" and "does". My buddies Iphone "should" work up there as rogers says it has the area covered but he doesn't get a signal...bell does though.

I use Navigon Navigator on my iPhone. It works even while in airplane mode.

well, you shouldn't be using it while on an airplane lol......but then again, if you are, and still getting a signal, that's because you're free from all ground clutter. You should get amazing signals from more than the 5 required sattelites....(I believe gps works on 5 doesn't it?)
