Also Elfie, if you dont use SMS messaging then contact Rogers and have them deactivate it.
I kept getting stupid SMS Spam which costs money for each message. Highly annoying so I had SMS deactivated

Tboy:
I've owned nothing but smart phones of various makes since 2004. I wouldn't own anything else. Like you I dislike Apple as a company and the my shit don't stink attitude of apple users. But, I did get an iPhone last year and I have to say it's freaking awesome. Yes, there are things I don't like about it. I didn't like the lack of a keyboard, but I got used to the on screen one and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. The lack of a replaceable battery is a big downer and the camera is garbage (it's actually pretty good in daylight, but it sucks in low light at the lack of a flash really hurts it. My last nokia phone had a camera/flash as good as my normal digital camera). I also really dislike the way that Apple make is so hard to customize it and the worst think of all is the iTunes software which above all else would give me reason to switch to another phone.
I never had any intention of buying a regular mac computer and owning the iphone has solidified that, once a decent alternative comes in the next year or two I will probably switch away from the iphone.

That said, it IS an amazing phone. It really is. No other phone has close to the amount of software that the iphone does. Yes there's lots of shit to wade through but there's a good or excellent app to do just about anything you can imagine on it. Give it a try, a real try before you slag it off.
I'm in the same boat. I am not an Apple lover and used Blackberry and other keyboard equipped phones but I ended up with Apple 3Gs because it not only is an awesome product feature-wise but it has apps. This reminds me of so many different format wars (e.g. VHS vs Beta Max/ 8 track/ cassette,Apple vs PC) and the winner always ended up as the one that had the most content to use with it. iPhone has apps - great apps and it seems that the entire world is writing apps for iPhone. If any company is writing an as a service for their customers (food, transportation, software houses, etc) they will always write for the iPhone first (and many times only iPhone).

I agree - Tboy obviously has a big chip on his shoulder that was very well summarized in his first post. Fine - do your own homework - but if you want to actually use one device for the widest variety of functionality in your day-to-day life - visit the iPhone store and take a serious look at it. I did and because of my purchase I know Blackberry users who can't wait to get rid of them. Not because it doesn't work - just because of the lack of useful apps it has. As far as the keyboard goes - try the keyboard on landscape - the keys are easier to type the the Blackberry for me (the leap was even easier when I thought about how much I actually type using the keyboard).

Apps - great apps if you are traveling, cooking, ... living an active life. Are you a pilot - AOPA has a free app (for members) that lists all the details (including runway layouts and services) for over 5,00 airports across NA. Do you like listening to police dispatches - 99 cents gives your iPhone the ability to listen to emergency services real time all around the world. Flying abroad ? There are apps available to log your flight details and delays, free apps from most cities you visit detailing everything including public transit schedules. Electronics ? There are apps for antenna design, turning your iPhone into a highly accurate signal generator, etc. Or maybe you are now interested in earthquakes - there is an app that allows you to monitor them from all over the world.

BTW: The GPS with compass sounds funny until you actually use it. Turn it on in a strange city and it not only tells you where you are but tells you if you are facing the proper direction to get to where you want to go.

If I recommended a few apps for those crazy enough to end up purchasing an IPhone 3Gs - The free app 'Dictation' by Dragon. It is amazingly accurate (if you speak clear English) at taking dictation and converting it to text which then can be used in SMS, e-mail or pasted on any other application. Metro News - up to date and free. Great for those traveling that would like a quick summary of what is going on at home. Dictionary / Thesaurus is free and handy to use.

Of course instead or this toy I could just carry maps, books, newspapers and write letters instead of phoning - I mean do I really need this device ?. ... hmm-m Yeah I do !

don't have a chip on my shoulder, just don't like the way apple markets it's products or the "attitude" of many apple users. (as demonstrated in this thread). All I say is do your homework and don't limit yourself to one product simply for the pinache of it.

As for apps:

All those apps. How about one that allows you to use your phone for...wait for it...a PHONE.

Sure IF you're a pilot that app would be good.
IF you really really need a app that makes your phone laugh when you shake it
IF you really need an app that tells you the name of the song that's playing on the radio (but you won't need the radio because the iphone does everything)
IF you really really need an app that tells you where the closest starbucks is,

But if you're trying to tell me I (or anyone) should get an iphone so they can spend more money to get a bunch of apps that they don't need or want, then, what does that tell you?

As for your beta/vhs analogy. Are you SURE you want to do that? See, beta was and still is a far far far superior medium and is still used today in many professional video studios...and where is VHS today? in the boneyard. So if you're comparing the Iphone to vhs, ahem, you just said it is an inferior product to the others......

For the record, I went out and looked at buying an iphone. Talked to people that have them, looked at the features, looked at what it can and can't do. Then I looked at other phones (omnia, HTC Touch pro, quite a bit actually). And then I looked at the cost. I have two cellphones: one for my home number and one for my mobile (because I wanted to keep both numbers for business).

I purchased both phones, on two separate plans, with NO contract, for the price of 1 iphone with no contract. In fact, both my plans total less than ONE iphone contract.

So, I have two phones that do everything I want to do and have $400 - $500.00 in my pocket.

So, if overpaying for a phone, and overpaying for service is what you want to do, by all means, MORE power to you...knock yourself out. But I will enjoy using both my phones and enjoy a few extra dates with Tricia with the money I save(d)......

Oh, you didn't realize .... iPhone is a phone !!! And for us people who don't talk on the phone 24 hours - yeah, it is a little handy to combine the functionality of many devices into one device. But you are right - why not carry a separate mp3 player (a phone is not an mp3 player), and a palm pilot (a phone is not a PDA), and DVD player (a phone is not a DVD player) and a GPS (or a street guide(s) (a phone is not a GPS), and a Camera (a phone is not a camera) a computer with a browser (a phone is not a browser), books (a phone should not hold books or audio books) ...... actually I don't think my grampa liked a car with a built in radio (a car is just a car).

So you carry two phones and you are happy to wander the city looking for Starbucks and other landmarks using intuition or the stars. Wow, nice -not for me - but you are happy. It's odd that you suggested that no one wants to admit a mistake for buying the iPhone but i have found most uses here just saying to try it and talking about their personal experience with it.

It seems to me you are more defensive about your decision and might even have - a little iPhone envy with a dab of frustration on your choice .. ?? Don't worry - I'm sure it is a logical and very economical choice. I like the ability of having all the functionality [phone/mps player/ camera/ video recorder / video player/ GPS / Contacts and the functionality of more devices through the widest variety of productive apps in the world] in ] one device and I'm willing to pay for it.

I'm not going to drive a bike because I hate automobile manufactures and I'm not going to ignore a great personal solution for me because I hate Apple. If guys are asking opinions on the iPhone - give them your solution but demeaning the value of a product and those who chose it because of some personal anti-Apple vibe doesn't help them. Just IMHO

lol @ amused, here's the point-----> .
and here's you ---------------------------------------------------------------> .
I said, an APP for the phone use you dolt.....

So, an IPHONE plays DVDs? Holy crap, you're brilliant!

Envy? Not in the least.....sounds kind of like YOU are just more than a little defensive tryin' to up sell your $800.00 phone.....

As far as me carrying two phones, you know what happens when you assume? You make an ass out of U..........I transferred my land line to a cellphone so I can have a cordless phone operational when the power goes out, have the ability to send and receive texts from my home line, and have many more functions you DON"T get with a landline.

So keep touting your iphone horn.....toot toot!!!!

btw, tell me, how does it feel to be a lemming?

Awww I hit a nerve ... you are just getting so frustrated in your little corner ... nipping and snarling because everyone is in a warm sunny place with their iPhone and you ... so lonely. Did I say I phone was a DVD ?? no but I'll take the Dolt and other name calling because it might help you get over your iPhone envy syndrome. Of course I'm not assuming you carry two phones - right ? "I have two cellphones: one for my home number and one for my mobile (because I wanted to keep both numbers for business)."

I'm with you .... I wish I had two phones one in each pocket, an mp3 player in the back pocket, the GPS in another pocket or is that star charts in the front shirt pocket .... whatever ... There, there , crazy iPhoine users ... don't they understand ??? I understand ... all those different devices in to one phone .... it would be soooo complicated to use ! Wait it was an mp3 player and then a phone call came in ... oh my, oh my. And then a camera .... whoa - it was hard enough figuring out how to use the TV remote ..
I am so bad recommending people to try the iPhone for themselves ... so bad. Of course I paid $199 but if $800 makes your decision look better. Of yeah, I'm on the same data & voice plan that anyone would pay even if they had a free phone. Of course if I join an monastery and then try to stop paying for data & voice plans - I'll have a penalty .... sheesh what a dolt !

There, there .... those iPhone users will be sorry ... LMAO

lol....you're rambling dude.......

You paid $199.99 my ass not without a contract and if you did sign up for a contract? You're overpaying for your service JUST because it is an iphone. If that makes you happy? More power to you. But I will give you the benefit of the doubt: did you line up at 3 am to get it for that price like a lot of the other lemmings?

Yes, you DID say DVD player as in "carrying one with you".

No, you didn't hit a nerve of any sort, I just like debating with lemmings. Speaking of which, you never answered my question, so how DOES it feel to be a lemming?

BTW: my $100.00 phones also play MP3s (and at a hell of a lot better quality than an iphone I might add), they also play HD videos direct to a Plasma or LCD tv, they also have GPS, a TON of apps, an awesome phone, caller id, photo dialing, voice dialing, full, partial, qwerty keyboards, 3.2" screen, an word processing, spreadsheets, email, 3mp cameras WITH flash, currency converter, all kinds of games (and a bunch more I can download), facebook mobile, goodle mobile, and all the other mobile apps, plus video recording oh and PLUS video on demand, video recording, audio recording, and I believe one even has HD video recording but don't quote me on that I haven't used it yet.

Oh, yeah, sorry, they don't have an apple logo on the outside so I guess I'm not as "hip" as you, but that's ok, I don't care about being having to be a lemming in order to be "hip"......

Bingo. The OP wanted tips on buying the phone, not an argument.

the hobby needs more capitalism
well, you shouldn't be using it while on an airplane lol......but then again, if you are, and still getting a signal, that's because you're free from all ground clutter. You should get amazing signals from more than the 5 required sattelites....(I believe gps works on 5 doesn't it?)
I'm not sure of how many GPS sattelites there are.

The nice thing about Navigon is everything is stored on the iPhone thus avoiding roaming charges when using it in the States.

There's a lot. Rub can correct me but I think a GPS device uses 5 to locate itself on the surface. So you have to figure at least 5 per quadrant, x 4 x 2 so that'd be about 40? Rub? where are you?......

Ok, so I wasn't exactly correct, and since I said "I believe" I wasn't entirely wrong........So, moral of the story is: you might be able to use your iphones for locating the beer store up north....but not very quickly due to satellite signal issues. That will help immensely if you're doing turn by turn: turn left 100 yds behind you lol........

But still: 5 miles outside Huntsville you can't use it......how many other places can't you?
You are still wrong. Funny.

Have you tried it? Not saying it doesn't but there is a difference between "should" and "does". My buddies Iphone "should" work up there as rogers says it has the area covered but he doesn't get a signal...bell does though.
It does.. Like DJK said, it works in airline mode (cell features turned off, doesn't mean you are in a plane for sure)..
I'm pretty sure that only 4 satellites are needed for GPS to work..

I know it's more than 3 because when reading up on it I was surprised because you only really need 3 for triangulation. Back in the Loran days it used 3 tower chains to plot your position......

The thread is still alive - I thought tboy & I had pretty well capped the last comments.
From my foggy memory, I thought that in outer space you need 5 satellites but that the surface of the earth itself is used if 4 satellites are required. Anyone ?
