HOW CAN A DISEASE WITH 1% MORTALITY RATE SHUT DOWN THE UNITED STATES?

There are two problems with this question.
I agree with all the law of big numbers stuff, but where are you getting those specific ratios for hospitalizations?

What's the colour of the sky in your world? Is it nice?
While over 150000 have died across the border these right-wing fools still preach their hoax fantasy. I keep wondering if they are trolling but it must be dementia of some type.

HOW CAN A DISEASE WITH 1% MORTALITY RATE SHUT DOWN THE UNITED STATES?

There are two problems with this question.

It neglects the law of large numbers; and
It assumes that one of two things happen: you die or you’re 100% fine.

The US has a population of 328,200,000. If one percent of the population dies, that’s 3,282,000 people dead.

Three million people dead would monkey wrench the economy no matter what. That more than doubles the number of annual deaths all at once.

The second bit is people keep talking about deaths. Deaths, deaths, deaths. Only one percent die! Just one percent! One is a small number! No big deal, right?

What about the people who survive?

For every one person who dies:

19 more require hospitalization.
18 of those will have permanent heart damage for the rest of their lives.
10 will have permanent lung damage.
3 will have strokes.
2 will have neurological damage that leads to chronic weakness and loss of coordination.
2 will have neurological damage that leads to loss of cognitive function.

So now all of a sudden, that “but it’s only 1% fatal!” becomes:

3,282,000 people dead.
62,358,000 hospitalized.
59,076,000 people with permanent heart damage.
32,820,000 people with permanent lung damage.
9,846,000 people with strokes.
6,564,000 people with muscle weakness.
6,564,000 people with loss of cognitive function.

That's the thing that the folks who keep going on about “only 1% dead, what’s the big deal?” don’t get.

The choice is not “ruin the economy to save 1%.” If we reopen the economy, it will be destroyed anyway. The US economy cannot survive everyone getting COVID-19.
That's only about 180,000,000 affected, barely 50% of the U.S. Pfshaw, what's the big deal? It's a harmless hoax.

Have to see if I can find the original posting. Unfortunately when I copied the info that didn't come with it (and I know that casts doubts). Can't vouch fo rthe percentages etc., but it's more of a wake up that 99% are all frolicking in the meadow after "recovering."

When kids are naive that's cute but when grown men are naive that's pathetic. All lefties belive whatever government tells them without question or even a second thought. How can you think that the guys in power have your best interest at heart? How can you be so naive? Can't you see that they are only after your money, our money? Trudeau and his goons are ripping us off and you believe anything they say?

Live in fear, that's what they want.

The disease is real. The reaction to it and its seriousness, have been blown out of proportion.

When the numbers begin creeping up again as we proceed with stage 3, are we going to close down again? How long do you want to play this game?

Of course, you and sunshine Juan believe monkey Disantis and chimp Abbot have it right and Justin and Ford have it wrong. If folks follow your lead downplaying a pandemic and fuck things up here, of course, our leader (namely Conservative leader NOT LEFTIE Ford) will once again start shutting things down.

...
What "proportion" of deaths do you find acceptable?
Canada has almost 9,000 deaths despite significant restrictions (an average year's flu deaths with no restrictions is around 1000 per year).

We can also see the results in places like Florida where they felt restrictions were overblown.

Would you rather be living in Canada or the States, in terms of covid?

Canada has been stricter and we've had a waaay better response. We've shown that "taking your medicine" and following science is effective. If there is backslide, they may tell us to back it up, but based on the track record, we should listen to what science says.

When the pandemic is over all these young people will be stuck in their parent's home unemployed playing video games streaming on twitch.

I wouldn't call you crazy, she does look like a man and some men find that attractive.
I'm in pandemic pussy starvation mode right now. It's possible anyone with a wig may trigger me.

You have to admit, Sarah nails Trumpfart down perfectly. She shows exactly how he doesn't know what he's saying through her expressions, it's hilarious. He just rambles when not given a script. All of you righties can make fun of Sleepy Joe but Trumpfart is in a world of is own within his own messed up mind.

Who do you believe then? It's not so much gov't one believes as it is the scientists one believes. Thus we believe govt's that direct based on science vs govt's based on tv show hosts and pundits. People who've been studying pandemics for 30 years have a sense of what works and what doesn't work. And at least in USA they've been right outside of a few stutter starts as people were trying to figure this virus out as it was a novel -i.e., never seen before - virus. Thus we learned in fact masks ARE helpful, and that the virus does not stick to surfaces as long as the scientists once feared. That's how science works - keep gathering data and make decisions based upon the best data. Europe and Canada and Australia took one approach, many USA governors and ultimately president another. The results of the different approaches are clear.

kherg, careful! Your post gives the facts and it may lead to the TINFOIL heating up on some of their pointy heads causing a sizzle affect.
