So Bill C-36 is making criminals of the 90% or more who would otherwise be law abiding citizens.
I don't agree with C-36 either (not that it affects me personally) but in the same way you can be criminally charged for possession of a small amount of weed, the likelihood of either happening is slim to none.

Notice they didn't arrest the other 90%?

I doubt you'd see this sting happen in Toronto. York region Police seem to be bored and don't have a lot to do up there.

First, they came for guys who wanted sex from an underage girl.. but I didn't do anything because I'm not a sick perv who would go for that sort of thing..
Then, they came for the...

The fact that we're seeing US style stings is extremely troubling. While it is comforting to see that they were only targeting the lowest of the low in this instance, and that most guys backed out of this.. it's still troubling. They could do the same thing tomorrow with an ad for a (presumably) consenting adult, and there'd be nothing to stop them from imprisioning a whole bunch of otherwise law abiding guys.

No, no, no, you have to crash your car through a Costco and kill 2 kids before they put you in jail. This is Canada after all. (I kid, the woman driver who killed those two kids is not in jail, she got a suspended sentence.) Even that Leaside dude who killed his best friend probably won't get jail time.

I suspect it won't be long before they sting guys coming to see an of age women , justifying doing so by saying the Hotel requested our help to deter illegal activity going on at the Hotel. The Hotels are concerned about their reputation in turning a blind eye to such activity. I am staying away from Hotels & think escorts will be soon finding they are not so easily ignored by the Hotel management. Just a couple weeks ago a Indie was investigated by the Monti Carlo in Markham , discovered & kicked out of the Hotel.

I disagree. With the controversy surrounding enforcement of the current prostitution legislation, I think that police resources are stretched too thin for them to worry about the average SP / client relationship. York Region has been focussing on underaged escorts for several years now, and rightly so. There is far too much work to be done in this area for them to shift their focus. Just my opinion...

Excellent point Cobra !! Why get involved, Right? BS.

I'm going to see this exquisitely beautiful 34 year old,
at her condo this weekend. she knows what she wants, and wants what she knows. I don't get it.
That's what I'm looking for, sexy for sure, but above all mature. I don't know, some kind of connection
which I could never get from a sixteen year old
I AM Right there with you on that note. Who the hell wants a kid ( little girl) anyway. The mature ladies know how to treat a man and I feel much safer with them due to this new Bill.

10% of the the guys who answered the Cops ads, that's who. And if you're sick enough and stupid enough to knowingly meet a 13-16 year old for sex, you deserve everything you get!

I'm in favour of regular stings of this type - eventually, those pimps will view underage pimping as too much risk and not enough reward. Hence less incentive to exploit underage girls.

Entrapment is not a defense or an excuse that can be used when in court; http://www.cba.org/CBA/sections_criminal/news2014/entrapment.aspx

YRP is just using BP as a means to an end , coupled with the powers of C36, are able to build a more solid case for court purposes.

Not just the language of the ad, but the communication with police on the other end. They don't need your cell phone because they have a transcript ready to go with the messages sent to them via text. Also, if guys phoned, that conversation was probably recorded by YRP and again, a ready made transcript of violations of C36; communication and an underage luring charge. It is on a one party consent, so no warrant or tap is required.

Correct.

Wasn't one of the criticisms of C-36 was that it was institutionalized entrapment?

any of the 220 guys that called her and she said she was underage, did any of you call the police to say there was a 16 year old in danger? or has the new bill stopped us from helping them because wed be idiots to try to help them and then get arrested?
Ah but C-36 may dissuade otherwise law-abiding and would-be johns from perhaps calling the police too for fear of self-incrimination. (So officer, I was looking at this BP ad and called her up. Then she told me she was under-age...)

Really? Use your untraceable hobby phone. Or a pay phone. Not difficult really.

Anyone using their regular phone these days is nuts for this.

Okay, but I don't have an untraceable phone but I suppose I can make the call private, or can they see through that? If you can find a pay phone, then you have to worry about cameras.

Remember, we are talking about such a discovery only after you speak to her. If her ad is explicit enough, the mere fact that you called and communicated might be against the law too.

Practically, it might not a be a problem to be a good Samaritan with no repercussions, but the perception of culpability might be enough to discourage.

No such thing as an untraceable hobby phone.

The 7-11 phone may not be in your name, but if the cops want to find out who has the phone, they can. Phone doesn't even have to be on and they can locate it. I'm told it doesn't even need a battery in it. Easy as a ping from a cell tower, triangulate, and boom, they find your phone and they find you.

Pay phone would be more difficult, but there's always the eye in the sky.

If you called to report this on a hobby phone do you really think they are going to take the time and effort to do everything you say?

You've been watching too many cop shows. Call the anonymous tip line. They will let it go as a public service.

OMFG (sorry, had to use that). Thank you Butler, I thought everyone was losing their freakin' minds. Seriously!

C'mon GP, you don't really believe that do you. I hope you just forgot to finish with. // sarcasm off

No, only if you're super paranoid. Holy crap, that's so far down LE's list of priorities, it's not even funny. No cop would want to pursue anyone on those grounds. A judge would probably give them shit if it ever made it that far, which it wouldn't.

You think they'd spend all that time and resources on trying to track down a guy who calls 222-TIPS anonymously from a payphone to report being offered sex from a 16 year old on a backpages ad? To what, ask him if he's the guy who made the call? If they have some evidence that you're on Canada's most wanted list, then maybe.

But this is insane. You guys can't honestly be so paranoid as to thinks LE would have time for that. Please tell me you're all joking.
