I believe Xi has vested interest in ending the war at least temporarily.
Like Donald Rumsfeld's trip to Iraq with his peace envoy to shake the
hand of Saddam Hussein Xi is on a mission to help out his ally. The
difference is Xi's focus is on the aftermath not escalation of the war.
Xi's only vested interest is to have normal trade relations with Russia on the guise that it is about creating a more "Peaceful Resolution" to this War in Ukraine!!

China are not going to openly disclose what weapons and arms they will secretly provide Russia with in their invasion of Ukraine, and for Russia to meet its goals in Ukraine!!
Russia after meeting so much of unpredicted resistance from Ukraine will now only be too pleased to annex as much territory in the Donbas Region and then agree to any Chinese Designated Peaceful solution. They are now fully aware that a regime change in Ukraine to install a Puppet Head of State is now a Wishful Thinking, compared to the start of the invasion. It is certain that China's Peace terms align with these Russian intentions!!

Xi wants cheap Russian oil.
As long as the world is pissed he can get it at a discount.

Why?

If Ukraine decides whatever is proposed is in their best interests then who are we to be upset?
Unfortunately, Xi basically just gave Putin a greenlight to continue fighting and didn't really propose anything Ukraine looks interested in.

Maybe it is just an opening bid and he is going to spend some real effort trying to find something acceptable to both sides, but it looks mostly like just posturing.

Xi wants, and will likely get a big part of eastern Russia in our lifetimes. I don't think he is going to throw Putin a lifeline. Better for Russia to fail for China so they can slip in and quietly take back those territories while Russia is down.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

In the meantime, I think I read somewhere that China is going to bankroll and build new gas pipelines to China. May as well, they're going to own them one way or another.

I don't think there is anything or anyone could say to Putin except, OK, here, you can have eastern Ukraine and Crimea and you won't have to pay for or answer for your war crimes to make him cease fire.

Maybe Xi just went to size him up and use Putin as the useful idiot for a change, to help China with Xi's desire to change up the world order?

Not in those words, but that is a good deal for Ukraine. After all, those regions are pro-Russia and if they want to stay with Russia and if it will stop the war, then Ukraine can move on and do whatever it wants.

They were pro Russian before the war.
Think they still are?

Putin would have had more territory if he had accepted the independence votes and not started this war.

Not sure if they are still pro-Russian. But I think if they were anti-Russian those regions would have fallen to Ukraine by now?

I am not aware Putin has ever looked to Xi to check if it was signal
red or green to cross the Ukraine border. Xi's support of Putin's war
is a piece of cake compared with the support of Zelensky from NATO
members and now Japan. Xi is not the one who has been adding fuel
to the fire in the Ukraine battlefield.

I am hoping Xi will succeed in persuading Putin to stop
fighting ASAP and turn Russia's focus from the west to the
east for the sake of its future. But some people are wishing
to see Ukraine continue fighting in a protracted war.

If NeoNazi sympathizes President Zelensky agree to China peace plan, the CIA will kill him. Just look at history what the CIA ( neocon) did to the leader of South Vietnam! President Zelensky is in a catch22 situation, he will lose the war with Russia, his own Generals will kill him so he can be take the full blame or Russia may kill him or his own Urkanine people will probably tried him and then kill him or CIA will kill him because they rather still proxy war continues with Russia Federation. No good outcome for President Zelensky!
Best bet for him now is to leave the Urkanine country now withsuitcase ofmoney and seek asylum!

That's basically what Xi offered, but it doesn't look like he is going to make any real effort to make it happen.

The meeting really did make it look like Putin fucked himself over and is in an even weaker position with China than before.
(I reject the argument that "Xi is using Putin to wage a proxy war against the West". You can squint and make it look like that, but I don't think that's a fair description of the whole dynamic.)

There was a fair bit of reporting that Putin didn't launch his war until after the Olympics because Xi would have been upset and Putin couldn't afford that.

Xi doesn't appear to have much interest in making Putin stop fighting. Even his "ceasefire" plan would keep Russian forces tied up in a tense border as they maintain an occupying force in the region.

I do not know why you say that.

Xi is the ONLY statesman who have called for a ceasefire.

A bad peace is still better than a good war.

Xi knows exactly what he wants (oil at a deep discount) and how to get it without spending treasure and blood.

Russia and China just concluded a deal that shifts the geopolitical center of gravity in Europe, Asia and beyond.

I would say that because talk is cheap and he doesn't appear to be doing much to facilitate it happening.

I'll be happy to be wrong here, but "Give Putin the terms he wants for his ceasefire" isn't really much of a serious offer, and that's where it stands right now.

China also want peace for the Belt and Road to Europe.
