It will be a GREAT Olympics. Sport makes the game not the venue.
Not for the common people of Rio, they are spending millions and millions on Olympic venues there. A lot of that money is being diverted from health care, education and basic infrastructure! Every venue is different, countries like Brazil don't need the financial strain the Olympics put them in.

HBO just aired a very good look into the Olympics, on their show 'Real Sports.' The Olympic committee demand too much, and then look away at how things get done. What Russia did to many EE workers, was almost slavery. Hundreds died or maybe thousands died, nothing was going to get into Russia's way, to put on a great show!

Let me see... we got the pollution (water and air)
we got the Zika virus
we got the rampant street crime
and the athletes village is still not ready
AND now let's add the total corruption of the IOC in allowing the Russians to participate in these games even though they have been caught cheating and doping at every level from the top down. Money and politics trumps integrity and safety.......

WHAT A TOTAL SHAM !
For the first time ever I agree with what you say 100%. Could care less about these Olympic games have no desire to watch a single event.

To be fair Brazil (and Rio) was in a fairly good and prosperous position when it was awarded the Olympic games. I spent a few weeks in Rio in 2011, and never felt insecure. They do have large slummy areas, but they were separated from others, and why would you go visit one of those areas. That being said they are have had a major financial downturn and I could see how it may be much more insecure now -- but I just did not see it in 2011

You're right, since they were awarded the games, a financial downturn has hit Rio. The spending of 15 billion for a brief moment in the sun, is just a terrible to use your limited resources!

They need to move the water sports to a venue with clean water even if outside Brazil.

Then they should throw the IOC committee into the Rio water that they say is clean.

The Olympics has now become two events going back several Olympics.

1) 3 Months to Opening Ceremony - The Media Fear Mongering Games. The Media has basically lost in every one of those games

2) The Actual Games

There will be some issues no doubt at Rio. but I will give it the benefit of the doubt at first.

Note - the above is only dealing with the running of the event itself. (not post financial stress which is pretty clear or cheating)

I'm sure it will be a good show on TV. Unless some disaster happens, like a terror attack or people are contracting Zika left and right.

The real story is after it's over, when the cameras go home and Rio counts the real cost of putting this show on. All the money being spent on the demands from the IOC, was it a good decision? That probably won't be answered for years to come.

The IOC has a policy (maybe unwritten?) of rotating the venues among North America, Europe, Asia and now South America. Maybe a permanent site makes sense, but where?

China or India they can afford it. $10 per citizen if the Olympics cost $10 billion.

It is customary for the guest countries to dip their flag as they pass by the host country' reviewing stand. One country will not dip its flag.

The word on the street is that a few American basketball players (including DeRozan) walked into a brothel by mistake.

Also heard that they are staying on a cruise ship and not in the village.

Four time Champion Vincenzo Nibali falls on his way to certain gold on the 145 km road race and breaks both his collarbones! Eugenie Bouchard upsets Sloane Stephens.

My fears have been confirmed, a good win for Genie.

It seems to me that Australians have won the Gold Medal in public whining so far.
