Wow Lindhal stands tall again. Sweden eliminates Brazil on penalty kicks!

The Brazilians made the same mistake as the Americans, they underestimated their opponents. You cannot break down catenaccio with a frontal attack, you do it with wing play. Sweden nows play for the gold medal.

Barbera > Solo. The Brazilian goalie didn't resort to a cheap tactic to gain an advantage. Hope Solo has disgraced her community, she should get a cat-of-nine-tails and flatulate herself.

Latest news.

Rio has no money left to host the Paralympic Games and tickets sales are very slow.

I heard this on CBC Radio 1, went to verify but it appears to be taken down.

Only 12% of tickets have been sold so far. I even noticed, when Usain Bolt won the 200 tonight, the upper bowl had a lot of empty seats.

Rio is trying their best, but that 15 billion they spent is the perfect example of opportunity cost.

The athletes will always save an Olympics with their grit, determination, style and substance. They have all shone their souls to produce the bright lights we have seen.....

......but then there's always counterbalances like the four dolt swimmers who have managed to become the poster kids for dumbasses along with the sportsmanship award winner (ie the least likely to win this) Hope Solo who took on mosquitos and IKEA with her so amazing views of life. Let's hope she stays solo the rest of that wretched life..!

Not really a sensible view because all those EU countries (and the U.K. ;-) send teams for each event. But I get how desperate everyone is to avoid this view:

http://www.nbcolympics.com/medals
BTW my understanding is that the official version takes into account the colour of medals before the number of medals. I know the US likes to do it differently. Now as there isn't much of a race for them, they might just as well accept the official view.

That's an interactive graphic, you can select the medal type and it will give you the ranking.

Every Olympics, media from different countries take shots. They said our winter one sucked, now we say Brazil sucks.

I thought the games were going to be negatively impacted by the economic, environmental and social challenges the country faces, but I was wrong. The athletes made the effort to put their efforts on the front page and for the most part, the press followed their cue.

The coverage was pretty good for all networks. Scott Russel did a good job considering Brian Williams was a mainstay. His co-hosts, Tewksbury and Baily were great as they offered a lot of insight to their sports and their animated enthusiasm was genuine and felt by the audience.

I did enjoy the coverage of the track and field commentator, Mark Lee. His voice reminds me of Don Whitman, who used to call a lot of Olympic events.

I did not care for the English commentator (Byron MacDonald) doing the swimming and Elliotte Friedman just didn't cut it for me (he is not a great live sports voice), though his gaffe during Phelps win was hilarious.

I also liked how they would do an update on the screen showing you what was happening on the other channels - Quite often I would immediately switch to a channel offering a sport I wanted to see.

Another aspect I liked is that Brazil did the games on the cheap - I heard the opening and closing ceremonies were not as lavish as other years. :personally I cannot be bothered with either of them as they are generally boring.

Overall I give the Olympics an solid A.

I wasn't so pumped about these Olympics and I didn't watch much of it but there were some great stories. These were the last Olympic games for probably the two greatest Olympians of all time - Phelps and Bolt. De Grasse and Penny were great stories for Canada. One thing that really struck me was the level of strength and athleticism in the women's events - they have come a long way in such a short period of time. Case in point Katie Ledecky the US swimmer that won 4 gold medals and almost lapped a few competitors in the 800M which she won by over 11 seconds. Crazy.

Yep. Agree with everything said there... Mark Lee was perfect, Byron MacDonald terrible, plus his voice cracked a bunch of times and it was very annoying...

Agree with comments about CBC coverage. However for me, having cut the cord from TV and relying on on-line coverage on the CBC at the constant commercials (same ones, over and over and over) turned me off and I often had to shut down out of frustration.
There will always be muck raking reporters who place emphasis on what's 'wrong' and I choose to ignore them. Ffor me some of the memorable moments are the acts of sportsmanship (e.g. The kiwi helping the American up), the unexpected wins like Van Niekerks 400 metre run from lane 8 and the human interest stories like Pennies way of not looking at the result board for 30 seconds and then her genuine surprise at winning.

CBC Rio Olympics online also had raw feeds of certain events and British commentators instead, which showed entire athletes qualifying for a lot of the events. They were much better handled than the usual CBC channel direct online feed.

Rogers 4K channel was showing events without any commentators. Just the sound of the crowd. It was different and not as enjoyable as I did not know the background of the athletes or if there were any rivalries taking place.

Both BM and EF are never calling swimming again. BM got caught making some derogatory remarks against a chinese swimmer when he thought his mic was off; apparently a big uproar in China. CBC issued an apology but damage done.

EF not only confused Phelps with Lochte, in Penny O's gold medal swim, he kept calling her Overholt. He is not suited for play-by-play, more of an analysis color guy.

Steve Armitage used to call swimming over the past few Olympics. He used to get so excited screaming at the top of his lungs even when a Cdn was finishing last. He didn't have too much to get excited about since we didn't win many medals over the past 20 years.

It was annoying, but in some way, I wish he called Penny's gold medal swim. He might have cough up a lung or lost his voice. It would have been epic! :)

Steve was scheduled right to the last but health issues put him on the sidelines....
