Back when he was drafted / signed - it was around the time Lindros spilt some beer on a girl in a bar - Daigle was asked something like “what makes you special (or better) compared to “The Big E”. Daigle says “I don’t spill my beer”.

What a waste that guy was. Hell if a JR player but to soft for the NHL. He did perform in helping Hull win the Championship - he was purchased for that reason by Hull. Gretz owned part of that team. They basically “purchased” the Memorial Cup that year.
I lived in Ottawa in the early to late 1990's and went to many Senators games and saw him play. I also watched some of his junior games on TV. In junior he could use his speed to get past the defense - in the NHL he would get pushed off the puck or angled into the corners as while fast he no longer had a significant speed advantage and was not as strong as most NHL defencemen. He did score 20 goals in is rookie NHL season on a really bad Senators team.

Quick fact check - according to Hockey db.com Alexandre Daigle never played for the Hull Olympiques. In the 1995 Memorial Cup Hull lost all 3 games. Daigle is not listed on the Olympiques roster - as per Hockeydb.com he played 18 games for the Victoriaville Tigres and 84 games for the Senators that year.

The only time that Hull has won the Memorial Cup is 1997.

I know it is for only one year but $8mm is way too much for what the Sabres are getting for that amount of money (Yeah yeah, I know he won the Hart a few years ago.) I always thought he was overrated and overpaid.

I thought it was him they bought for the winning season - but must have obviously been another player - the “Owner” told me basically he bought the cup that year - mistakenly (my old memory - thought that guy was Daigle). There was a player they brought in for the playoffs - Dube?
I stand corrected Sir.

Wait !!

Taylor Hall won the Hart Trophy, and is overrated?

Why hasn't anyone ever brought this up before?

I didn't think Daigle played for Hull as I was living in Ottawa in 1995 and had no memory of him joining the Olympiques for the playoffs - but I can't claim I knew (or remembered) for certain.

Your post make me curious so I went to my hockey history source (hockeydb.com) to check it out. So thanks for the excuse to take a trip down memory lane.

We all know Dart is the self professed best evaluator of over-rated hockey players. He keeps trying to tell us so. I'm surprised he doesn't use his golden mic more often. Someone should perhaps remind Dart Carey Price has an .888 save percentage at 11 mill per year since we all know Dart likes to round up.

How about Jack Eichel with 2 goals, Taylor Hall with one, Eric Staal with three, Kyle Okposo at zero...maybe the coach is the problem.
Sabres paying Hall $8mm and he's got only one goal so far this season. The good news is that it is only a one year contract. He also has a no movement clause. (Skinner still at zero goals.)

Could be the Coach. Could be these guys just don’t jell. Or even partially the market - who really wants to live in Buffalo? If you’re making multiple millions a year - wouldn’t you rather be doing that in say Florida or California or ....... with Covid any Northern city - hell TO for that matter is a drag for these Young guys.
On paper - loads of talent.
Look at Edmonton - even before McDavid - loads of talent (no goal tending though) - look at them even now with McDavid.
Sometimes - with no “glue” the talent does not matter.
Some of these guys Buffalo will be gone next year and quite possibly get to teams with a really good rooms and might be a hell of a different year for them.
You have to remember these guys in general are “the best of the best” playing against the same. The mental part of the game becomes much much more important.
Look a Spezza - finally got back home (in Covid that’s huge) - he finally got the help needed from Leafs Medical / strength staff to be able to get his leg strength back. He is skating pretty well for what is an “old guy” in the NHL.

What is amazing is that Buffalo have 4 forwards with a combined AAV of $31mm and a combined goal total of 3. Yes, something is definitely wrong here.

I think Jack Eichel is just having a bad year and he is only 24. So, lots of upside. Despite his one MVP year, Hall never scored more than 27 goals in a season. I think he's done. I don't know what the heck is wrong with Skinner. Kyle Okposo is 32 now so he is probably done.

I felt very sorry for Eichel when he got drafted to Buffalo :(.

I think the combined AAV is actually $33mm (not $31). 10, 9, 8, 6.

Eichel is a better player than Buffalo deserves but $10mm should ease the grief a bit. LOL! Skinner is a mystery. He's only 28 and should be in his prime. Hall is 29 and might never score even 27 goals again. Okposo at 32 is probably in a permanent decline.

So, Skinner is probably the single worse contract and Buffalo as a team have the worse contracts in aggregate.

BTW: I don't understand why some people are so down on Buffalo? Superstar and future HOF Patrick Kane is a Buffalo native and lived in that city until maybe very recently.

I’m not sure either but.... Buffalo - lake effect snow - it’s kinda nowhere if you know what I mean. Much the same with Cleavland, Columbus - but those cities seem to have a “better” vibe when I have been there??? I just can’t put my finger on it.
Hey , TO (The Big Smoke) is far from one of my fav cities either - but I’m stuck :).

Cut from an article I read today....

Even with his sluggish start to the season, Nylander is on an 82-game pace of 27 goals and 63 points. That contract — with the $6.9 million cap hit — will only look better in time. Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansen are both pulling down $8 million on the cap annually for the Predators as their second- and third-line centres. They have three goals and 12 points combined this season. Clayton Keller is pulling in north of $7 million for the Coyotes. Matthew Tkachuk is in Year 2 of a three-year bridge contract that carries a $7 million cap hit. After that, a seriously big payday.

Nylander’s deal has another three seasons left after this one.

The list of Leafs over the past 40 years with more points to start their career (first 328 games) than Nylander (237) includes Marner, Matthews, Rick Vaive and Vincent Damphousse. That’s it.

Let's talk tax again.

A few years ago we were having lunch with a couple of tax partners from a "Big 6" (now "Big 4") accounting firm. They said some/many professional athletes don't actually live in the city where they play.

In Canada you are taxed where you are "resident" which might be in a different province than where you play.

If you are an American like Auston Matthews, there is a 183 day rule in the Canada-U.S. tax treaty. Prior to COVID, the Leafs played many of their games in the U.S.. Plus, someone like Matthews would return to Arizona early either because the Leafs didn't make the playoffs or got bounced in the first round. So, there is the possibility that Matthews might not actually spend 183 days in Canada.

Question: Is there a tax expert in the house?

Let's play Costanza and his BFF for a moment. Nylander's cap hit is actually $6,962,366.

I didn't write that, unless I'm Jonas Siegel, but nice try.

Nylander's contract is fair, imo. Not underpaid, not overpaid.
Jeff Skinner might be the worst.
The worst comtract in NHL history? Maybe Rick Dipietro. Lol

worst contract in Leafs history?
David Clarkson? Or maybe just paying Aki Berg any type of salary.

I still say Tie Domi's is the worst contract in Leafs history. At least Berg did something on the ice and didn't play the politics off of it.

Was watching Sportsnet (or was it TSN?) last night and the talking heads were wondering who would offer Taylor Hall a long term contract after this season? Forwards who have scored one goal so far this year are in great demand?
