John Tavares GP: 163 Goals: 79 Assists: 85 Points: 164

Mitch Marner GP: 318 Goals: 91 Assists: 227 Points: 318

I wouldn't say Tavares is the Leafs worst contract when he's a point-per-game player just like Marner and they both make almost the same $$$$$.
Personally, I don't think JT91's deal is bad (at least not yet).

Different points in their career to compare. 11 million for Tavares looks too much. He should carry a line with 35 to 40 a year. His 5 on 5 stats aren't good. Tavares was a coveted free agent, looks to be in the 8 to 9 range realistically.

Tavares shouldn't need marner, looks like that was the case. He looks to be a 20 to 28 goal scorer in a regular year.

I wonder if teams will get away from the 8 year deals for guys on their 3rd contract, 29 years and over. Seems almost like a crap shoot now. Bergeron, Marchand, ovi, Crosby and others don't miss a beat, not so much for some others.

Also, karlsson probably signed right around the time of the sens playoff run when he was incredible so San Jose or any team would have predicted this rapid decline.

The economics have changed. Unless you are a superstar exception, your career is pretty much done at around 30-32.

Taylor Hall (yeah I know he won the MVP 5 years ago), who I thought was always overrated, was lucky to get $8mm, albeit for only one year. So far this year he's got 1 goal and a minus 10. He's only 29.

Next year, he'll be really lucky to be offered minimum wage by Dubas.

Karlsson had been a Shark a full season before they signed him to the contract.

Is Dart saying he knows when a player is over-rated?

Clarkson's contract ended last year...I think Columbus picked up some of it.
Columbus took all of it.
In exchange, the Maple Leafs took Nathan Horton's deal.
The Clarkson deal was insured, Horton's not.

The logic behind the trade was that Toronto could get DC's salary off the cap, while Toronto knew they would be stashing NH's deal on LTIR. Blue Jackets got out from a salary producing nothing, and hoped to get some value out of Clarkson's. Unfortunately, shortly after the trade, Clarkson was injured, spent balance of his deal on LTIR as well.
But, insurance paid most of it. The trade worked for both clubs.
Columbus got out from a onerous zero value deal, Toronto got $5.25Mm in cap relief.

A late entry: The Anaheim Ducks have placed Adam Henrique on waivers, he's making $5.825Mm for each of the next 3 seasons. Just last year, AH scored 26 goals in 71 games. One goal & 3 assists so far this year.

Jeff Skinner is the winner. It’s not even really that debatable in my opinion.

He is not even a decent NHL player this year and last. No real reason to expect it to change. And they have 6 at 9m left. With a team that may not want to spend to the cap.

Some of those other bad contracts are more players that are overpaid but are still productive NHL players.

It’s amusing that some of the Habs haters point out contracts like Weber and Price before this guy. Are they great contracts . Nope. But at least they are still productive players now.

I am pretty sure that Alexandre Daigle would be near the top of the list for worst NHL contracts.
