I have a hunch that Southgate only watched Tomori play against Chelsea. Last season, the defensive corp stayed healthy throughout. At the start of the season Florenzi, Kjaer and Calabria all went out with injuries and Romagnioli left for Lazio, none have returned so far. At the time Theo was moved out to midfield and young Matteo Gabbia (Nicolas Cage) becoming Tomori's center mate, Dest replaced Calabria. Tomori tried to do too much and got red carded in the San Siro leg, he didn't look much better at Stamford Bridge. Fortunately Malick Thiaw has proven to be a better fit than Gabbia, he's an unusually mature defender for a 21 year old. Young Signiorino Gabbia might be overwhelmed with sharing the last name of the greatest actor in the universe.

Hansi Flick has not called up Thiaw. This is odd Leroy Mane is on Der Mannschaft (love that name) but Sadio Mane is playing for Senegal.
