The Windows 7, Big Sale was in today's newspaper inserts.

Best Buy had some very good looking PC sales with Windows 7 installed.
So did Office Depot and Office Max in WNY. While they are advertised today, they can't be picked up till Oct 22.

It appears W7 is all 64 bit, at least that was the case for all sales items shown today. Haven't used W7 yet so I'm not that familiar with how many versions W7 has to offer.

Preordered mine during the sale back in late June, hopefully they ship it on time. Wonder if they'll ship it on the 22nd or it'll arrive at my door on the 22nd.

The true measure of W7 performance will be months down the road after it has a chance to get clogged up with peoples shit like anti virus, anti spyware, anti phishing, anti popup, anti spam, email scanners, firewalls, Windows automatic updates, program automatic updates, java updates, adobe updates, file indexer, msn chat, yahoo chat, winamp agent, download managers, weather panel, local gas prices, and the 6 zillion other 3rd party programs that load at startup and remain in memory.

Vista was superb until it got bogged down and I don't even install junk.

So far found out that Rogers free Virus Protection software is not configured for use with Win7 64-bit, it comes up with an error saying, must be using XP or Vista 32-bit to install.

Also found out there is no Windows Mail included so you need to use a 3rd party mail client like motzila or MS Outlook.

Other than this so far so good. It looks almost identical to Vista so getting used to it should be easy.

Stopped at BB and they of course were knocking Avast, which is supposed to be W7 ready and pushing either Norton 2010 or Kaspersky 2010 which was kind of expected. BB tries to scare you into buying all the security extras lately....:D

BB has an interesting deal going in WNY. If you order your new PC online, with W7 now Oct 18 up to 11AM on Oct 21, they will deliver it to your home on Oct 22 for free with no shipping charges.

cut the cords guys windows 7 is the shit. It has taken microshaft a long time to do this but. I think we have the real deal. Only prob is onboard sound card. Other than that fast and snappy. It has taken them almost a decade but better late than never. Enjoy playing with it, way better than vista.

Have had Windows 7 Release Candidate (The final beta version released to stores) since July. Things were running smoothly for a while. Was VERY impressed. More recently, things have slowed down, and my Norton anti-virus icon in the (now hidden) system tray disappeared for good. Called Norton, they asked me to reinstall it. I did, icon reappeared, then disappeared again after a couple of days. Online, it says this is a known issue.

Overall, I'm usually good at keeping my OS running smoothly, so I'm baffled as to why my windows 7 has slowed down. I think I'm going to format and reinstall W7 all over.

Just my $0.02.

This has always been a problem with Windows, it accumulates crap that over time slows down the system. Best solution is, format, do a fresh install and your PC runs like new again until after use it accumulates crap all over again requiring another format and reinstall.

This is another reason for going to Linux which has none of these issues.
Linux uses a superior file system that accumulates no crap. In the three years running Linux no format was required, it just runs.

I'm gonna have to agree with ya there. Linux is an amazing operating system and far more superior than Winblows.

How different is the User Interface of Linux compared to Windows?

Ie. Icons on the desktop, a "start" button, right clicking, etc etc. I would have gone for a mac if it didn't take such a learning curve to get used to.

Ubuntu has a clean easy GUI. Go to the Ubuntu site to see desktop screenshots.
I'm no geek and picked it up on my own with excellent help from their forums.

You can download and run Ubuntu as a Live CD to see what it is like without disturbing Windows. Then if you like what you see do a dual boot install. This way you have full use of Windows while you play around with and learn Linux.
I did this 3 years ago and am now M$ and Mac FREE. I can do everything I want with Linux now and best of all it is all FREE.

I currently have a dual boot of Windows 7 and Windows Vista, cause my W7 expires June 2010. I wish I had the space to do a triple boot... LOL.

All you need is ~20 GB for a Linux partition.
I've run Linux on a 6 GB partition with no problems at all when pressed for HDD space.

My Windows Vista partition won't partition less than 100 GB of a 180 GB (200 GB advertised) HD. Sure, I could partition the W7 portion, but that may cause W7 to suffer in performance. Plus, where would I keep all my porn? :p

The Linux 'partitioner' will create the needed Linux partition out of your Vista C-Drive with no problem. Linux will tell you to defrag 'C' first to push Vista towards the front of 'C' Drive while Ubuntu will be installed at the back of your 'C' Drive in a newly created Linux partition.

Put your porn on an External HDD for backup....:p
Or you could move your porn into the W7 partition.

Yeah, Windows/DOS didn't seem to be able to handle that task when it was partitioning the drives for me. Ubuntu sounds like it's every PC user's dream! My friend was telling me how great it was, and he's the one who gave me Windows 7 and tooted its horns first! lol

Most of my porn is on an external HDD, the "current and new" material are on the Windows 7 partition...lol. :p

Windows/DOS is slow and a pain in the arse to use.

I found Seagate Disc Wizard and Linux Partitioner faster and far easier to use for partitioning a HDD.

Try the new and free Microsoft Security Essentials. Works great on Windows 7.

I must be the only person happy with Vista64. I have never had a single crash.

Once you turn off that UAC crap, remove all of Media Player and Media Server apps and services, surf with Opera, protect with Avast...it runs like a charm.

Agreed, it's quite solid actually, I've never gotten it to crash. I'm a late Vista adopter so I didn't see all the problems the early users had so to me Vista is solid. It's just slowing down now during bootup so hopefully Win7 doesn't suffer from this or at least to the same extent.
