Windows 10 users you have until Oct 14 2025 to upgrade to Windows 11 but Microsoft has pretty steep hardware requirements, 8th generation intel CPUs or higher. They may consider 7th generation intel CPUs. Some Windows 10 users with older computers will have to buy new systems or upgrade their computers, some even may even switch over to Linux OS.

Hopefully windows 12 will come out before that and won't be as garbage or the planet will implode or something.

So, aside from Microsoft, does anyone recommend upgrading a 2+ year old Lenovo packing an 8th gen i7 to Windows 11? New interface to learn. No reason to expect it to be any less flaky than previous versions. Low MS trust in this corner. Seriously wondering which way to go here.

I'm thinking of switching to Linux.

I have one Windows 10 PC and two Surface tablets and none of them meet the upgrade requirements 😕 This sure feels steep

edit: Oh yeah I forgot: Personally I'm staying with Win10. I really don't need a newer system right now.

If you wait beyond October 14, 2025, do you lose Windows 11 as a freebie?

Worth reading this before you make up your mind whether Windows 11 is in your radar:

I currently have Windows 10 on a 7th Generation i5. I think it has enough "horsepower" to upgrade to Windows 11 but I'm just not sure I want to. BTW: I'm still using Windows 7 on my regular computer.

How does Window 11 compare to Windows 10?

I recently built a new computer and installed Windows 11 on it. Can't really compare performance with Windows 10, because I don't know how much is the software and how much the hardware. Definitely runs so much better than my old PC.
I've customized it so that the layout is similar to Windows 10. Can usually get accustomed to a new layout, but I honestly hated the default.

Do you have to buy Windows 11 or pay for a license for new builds?

What are the specs?
i9-12900K CPU
ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F motherboard
32GB of RAM
Corsair 7000D case
1TB of Samsung M.2 memory + 1TB my old SSD

It's my first liquid cooled machine too.
Stuck with my old 1080Ti GPU for now because I didn't want to buy a new one with the market being so tight. With the collapse of crypto, they're becoming more affordable again, so might spring for a 3080Ti.

Technically, I could have installed Windows 10 on it, then upgraded to Windows 11 for free, but I wanted a clean install. So yeah, I bought it.
Quick question: If you had upgraded to Windows 11 (from 10), do you use the same product key (COA) as for Windows 10?

My friend just recently re-installed Windows 10 on my i5 and Microsoft asked for the product key (COA)?

I bought Windows 11 and installed it direct, not upgrading, so I'm not sure of the process. I'm surprised it would even ask for the product key during the upgrade though.

Don't know why they asked but they did. The i5 already had a Windows 10 but we had to do a fresh install (long story).

I've always preferred doing a clean fresh install of any OS both windows and Linux. Doing an upgrade from W10 to W11 you run the chance of bringing corrupt files etc., from W10 into your newly upgraded W11 OS messing it up and causing problems.

With W7 you were able download W10 for free by putting a W10 ISO on a flashdrive for W10, then doing a clean install of W10 on whatever drive you desired. This also allowed to keep your old W7 OS as it was. Wish M$ still allowed that to be done with W11.

My friend did a fresh install of W10 so it should be pristine.

The question now is how do we upgrade to W11?

Does this mean itis possible to have both W7 and W10 on the same computer at the same time? If yes, I assume we have to partition the drive.
