Part of me wonders it this whole controversy was concocted to boost ratings. These awards shows have bled viewers the past few years. They needed a controversy like this.
If it was indeed genuine then I have to say this is a result of woke culture. Can't nobody take a joke anymore.
But I think its safe to say we won't be seeing Will Smith at a celebrity roast any time soon.
Based on their ratings and recent evidence it makes sense. But you never know could have gone too far or they wanted to cancel/throw Will under the bus and given his vulnerability is the perfect candidate.

You are not a woman. I don't prétend to understand how balding is for a man but you guys certainly don't know how traumatic it is for a woman. Violence was not the right choice but you guys should not brush off an issue you aren't aware of.
Agree with you. A lot of a woman’s “beauty “ at least as defined by society depends on her hair. All one needs to do is look at the time and money women spend on their hair compared to guys. A lot more women will find bald men sexy vs women. Sure some guys find going bald upsetting to a variable degree (🙋‍♂️) but, on average it is no where as big a deal as in women. In addition the condition she has I think can result in big patches of hair loss, which can be very unsightly, hence her saying she shaved her head so people didn’t think she had brain surgery.

Smith was laughing at the joke. It was only when his wife rolled her eyes at the joke that he took action.
When I first saw this, I thought yes he’s laughing but the expression on his face was not, and turned quickly serious, I think even before he looked at Jada. In any case I guess it matters little, his response was somehow, in an unreasonable way, an attempt to defend his wife, whether he realized it hurt her before or after she reacted.

You can't "both sides" this. You have a shit take.
Hold on…. She can’t think both sides wrong? Lol. Making fun of people for having a medical condition…. Then a massive over reaction from one of the biggest stars on the planet on live tv hitting a host?

It was embarrassing to watch on video. Glad I didn’t sit through it live.

Don't think so, K. Smith comes off looking like a maniac thug who can't take a joke. It's not good for his image. I think he just lost it.
I guess that's what happens when you follow the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard.

Yes Will laugh at the joke until he saw how uncomfortable she is. Once again it's not the first time she is being laugh at for this issue. You don't know what happens home. I am just asking for a bit of compassion here. Both side are wrong.
I agree with you. The joke obviously hurt Jada publicly, and was a low blow, especially knowing her discomfort would be seen by millions. But Rock didn’t deserve a slap, especially in the most public of circumstances, kudos to him for getting on with things, and keeping his temper together. A lot of people would not have been able to do the same. Smith seems to have done it to defend his wife, but it was over the top. But Smith also doesn’t seem right. People talk about how he smacked him and walked away smiling, but when he sat down, after the shouting, there are clearly tears welling up in his eyes. His first few words of his speech after talked about him being “overwhelmed”. Its obviously he’s struggling with something, not saying that excuses the behaviour. think it is possible to call out the wrongs, and also have some compassion for the underlying circumstances.

copy & paste from The New York Times:

Academy Condemns Will Smith for Slap at Oscars and Opens Inquiry
The day after Smith won best actor, the film organization criticized him for hitting the comedian Chris Rock, who had told a joke about his wife.

Will Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Mr. Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Mr. Smith then yelled and cursed at Mr. Rock after returning to his seat.

LOS ANGELES — As questions swirled about why the actor Will Smith had faced no repercussions for slapping the comedian Chris Rock during Sunday night’s Oscars telecast, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which administers the awards, said Monday that it had condemned his actions and was starting a formal review.
“The academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,” the organization said in a statement. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”
The statement came after a meeting Monday.
The incident unfolded Sunday night after Mr. Rock had made a joke about the closely cropped hair of Mr. Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, a condition that leads to hair loss. Mr. Smith responded by walking onto the stage of the Dolby Theater and slapping Mr. Rock, leaving stunned viewers wondering at first if the blow might have been scripted until Mr. Smith returned to his seat and warned him to stop talking about his wife, using expletives.
Behind the scenes at the Oscars, there were serious discussions about removing Smith from the theater, according to two industry officials with knowledge of the situation who were granted anonymity to describe internal deliberations. But time was short, because the best actor award, which Mr. Smith was heavily favored to win, was fast approaching, one noted — and stakeholders had varying opinions on how to proceed. There was also concern about further disrupting the live broadcast, the other said.

As the show went on, the actor Denzel Washington spoke with Mr. Smith during a commercial break. (Mr. Smith said that Mr. Washington had told him: “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”) Not long after that Mr. Smith won best actor. In his speech, Smith apologized to the academy and to his fellow nominees — but not to Mr. Rock — and defiantly sought to draw parallels to the character he played in “King Richard,” the father of Venus and Serena Williams.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Mr. Smith said.

He received a standing ovation.

The incident overshadowed the awards. On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” on Monday George Stephanopoulos described it as “something we have never seen before, something that is very hard to process: Will Smith, walking up onto that stage after Chris Rock told a joke about his wife — simply assaulting Chris Rock.”

Nah I just don't like hypocrites. Both wrong my ass, Chris told a pretty tame joke and Will went nuts. No compassion is needed for Will he's crazy, and Jada needs to learn to take a joke. But judging from what you've said women can't take jokes at their expense, only men can. Then you wonder why men still don't take you seriously?
There is no question that Will Smith went overboard…

Making fun of people for having a medical condition….
People should stop with this "medical condition" phraseology as if it's something horrendously life altering and makes her a sympathetic figure. Gimme a break. It's as much of a medical condition as a pimple on your nose.

Let her wear a wig. Women already have so many accessories to disguise how they really look. False eyelashes, makeup, padded bras, botox injections, boob jobs etc. etc. She brings the attention upon herself. If she is so emotionally scarred, so should women with short eyelashes.

It in no way justifies Smith's actions.

I'm prepared to get ripped a new one.

BTW, he's a crappy actor.
