I like the CBC. I find it informative and a pretty decent way to give Canadian talent a chance to be heard. Have you ever listened or watched US media? It's watered down pablum for the masses who respond to sloganeering. Call CBC provincial or pedestrian or even colonial but I'd rather have some national media entity trying to promote a Canadian point of view than SUN TV.
Okay you guys that insult people who don't watch the CBC and who, presumeably, like shows no one else does (based soley on the ratings). Tell us which CBC shows you like the best. No Coronation Street or other BBC import allowed or Jeopardy or US import allowed either (these were the two top rated CBC TV shows excluding Hockey Night in Canada).

C'mon why do you think its great?
Gee train, you really have thin skin if you read JB's post as insulting others who don't watch CBC.

CBC isn't all about ratings. Much of it's mandate as outlined in an earlier post has little to do with ratings. Try watching CBC North someday.

Two thumbs up. Randy and his wife talking about musical themes, playing selected songs in those themes, playing his guitar, anecdotes from a life in the biz. Awesome show.
It elevates radio programming to another level. We should be very proud of the stuff Canadians produce, and not just because it's Canadian,
but because it is so unique and wonderful. It's a reflection of who we are rather than some contrived culture being shoved down our throats, as some would like to believe.

I really enjoyed CBC Venture, too bad it got cancelled. I also like their documentaries.

One word: Talent.

Broadly the BBC is the best in the world. Of course they have clunkers, but for the last 20 or so years they have had to fill time 24/7. Quality will be diluted.
CBC has good radio and an adequate news service, but will never have the clout, talent and influence of the BBC.

CBC is what it is, a watered down version of the BBC.

If CBC had anything near BBC's budget, it would be able to put out a better product. BBC's annual budget was ~£5 billion last year compared to CBC's ~$1 billion. The CBC has had it budget cut every year since the mid 90's.

Any station whose highest ratings are derived from the rantings of a geezer who is racist and stuck in 1950's Canada, and the happenings on Coronation Street deserves zero tax dollars.

Wow, if only this debate was on a mainstream board - the country deserves to hear this passion!

Regardless of the general purpose for gathering here, it appears that we have a very general cross-section of media consumers, and, of course, Terb folks are never shy about sharing their opinions.

I'm a +1 guy for the CBC for many of the reasons talked about above. One of the shows that I like, Murdock Mysteries, was cancelled by City and this is it's first season of production under the CBC flag, and I'm happy about that.

It is sometimes difficult to measure the value of culture in terms of immediate return of dollars and cents - hence the debates about whether or not to support cultural events in Toronto at the cost of taxpayers. I really don't know who makes up those numbers about the economic return on Nuit Blanche, for instance, but I do know that it makes Toronto a lot better place to live. CBC is the same. Yes, it's in a marketplace dominated by for-profit corporations, but CBC is is a true multimedia Canadian network bringing entertainment and information to almost every Canadian. If you don't like for the CBC, chances are that you don't go to the AGO, ROM, Ontario Science Centre, CNE or Toronto Zoo. Who cares? - that's your prerogative, but a lot of citizens do attend and derive tremendous enjoyment, education and family time there. (We haven't even mentioned CBC children's programming yet.)

Our biggest concern might be whether or not there is waste at the CBC and how to root it out, but as for the general cost, I've just got to say - it's only a few bucks - get your head out of your wallet and consider the general good.

Why is CBC television and radio so bad compared to public broadcasters in other countries for example BBC UK
The CBC used to be worse.

You have to understand that due to being publicly funded, they require more Canadian content. At one time, there was very little in terms of quality of Canadian content vs U.S. networks, but the tide is changing.

Mind you, I don't watch the CBC for dramas. Usually sports, news and documentaries.

Everyone defending the CBC is focused on the news. OK, so I agree, the CBC news programming is actually quite respectable. But I challenge you to sit through an episode of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" without wanting to shoot yourself.

The problem with the CBC is that it tries to get/set cultural norms using tax dollars taken from the pockets of Canadian taxpayers. It's not so much public television (funding is contributed) as it is state-run-television (funding is taken) which smacks of banana republics and former soviet-bloc countries.

Culture that cannot survive does not deserve to survive and the idea of the government using my tax dollars to explain my culture to me is just plain offensive. The despots in Quebec shouldn't be legislating language, and the CBC shouldn't be using my tax dollars to produce shit in the interests of promoting some asshole civil servant's vision of Canadian culture.

We're a very young country relative to most of our neighbours. I remember a long time ago I was talking to some lowest-common-denominator from the US who was making fun of the FLQ crisis. My response was "well when your country was roughly the age of this country you were in a full-scale civil war. Relatively speaking we're doing quite well at this stage"

We're Canadian, give is time and we'll figure it out - without the CBC picking our pockets to tell us what's Canadian.

That's what is wrong with the CBC.
Perfectly put.
Except not so perfect, if you 'actually' read the many post supporting the CBC. Many different post list a number of non news programs. The rest of the post from EDdie sounds like a an 20 something rant who hasn't travelled through his country much to experience it's culture.

CBC Radio One and Radio Two are quite good.

As to CBC Television as compared to BBC Television (and remember the BBC has four major television channels) I'd point out a couple of things: the BBC has far more money, and on this side of the pond we what we see of BBC television programing is almost a "best of the BBC channel" the so, so and frankly awful never make it onto our television screens.

Likes other have said this is a really good broadcast. I like a lot of the radio programming, but find some of it just fucking lame, like the debaters, and that cornball Stewart Mclean . Rex Murphy blathers on about the weather and then cuts his callers off when they are getting to a point. Shut the fuck up Rex!

At least you get first hand news with the CBC, as their reporters are present in some of the most dangerous places such as Syria. On the other hand TV stations such as the Sun have their presenters or I call them Grumpy old preachers who are stuck in their studios and all they do is bash the CBC, CTV, the Left, Liberals, Islam, unemployed, Romani, Native Indians, David Suzuki etc. They think that after a long stressful work day, the ordinary Canadians would be entertained by the likes of Elk mouth Ezra, Crooked Smile Charles Adler, Boringline Brian Lilley or Mike Corrupted Coren. That's why I think it is important to still keep the likes of the CBC in business.

Anyone sensing a trend here?

The early naysayers in this thread and many from the last one on this thread have gone silent. It's clear a good number of the members support the CBC and give legit reason for their support.

Unfortunately CBC has a had to close many overseas offices or run the remaining offices with skeleton staff as a result of the draconian cutbacks. Many of the on location reporting is done by stringers/freelancer journalist, not actually on CBC staff.
