why is CBC so bad.

stern, music and the 2 good comedy channels for me. very seldom i check out the trucking channel since they do nation wide traffic and drivers call in with problems on the road to avoid. the radio has never let me down ever.I flip between the comedy channels, Stern, and Dr. Laura. She freaking kills me - makes me feel bad about myself on one call but then reminds me that I do in fact have a good heart and treat people rightly.
Seen. I hate it though. As I get older I don't like spending $1 billion of my tax dollars for programming that can be (and is on a regular basis) delivered by other media, at no direct cost to me. Let CBC die. There would still by HNC, and the Canadian-produced crap shows would disappear. The remaining Canadian networks would be strengthened by the increased access to the advertising revenue the CBC currently consumes. Remove direct public funding and let them compete head to head with the other media corps, and Canadians would get what they want (ie. what they are willing to pay for).I already have satelite radio. It only takes you so far. And a lot of the time when I'm on the road, I'm not in my car.
I'm good with the CBC.
I even listen to CBC 2 quitely in my office to help me concentrate during the day.
The CBC is a Canadian icon, part of our history and I really can't relate to those who would love to see it shut down.
i have been to some very remote areas. like driving on a road for 13 hours and not seeing another car and not having a cell reception for at least 10 of those hours. thing about the tracking pattern of the sat radio satellites is they go in a figure 8 pattern so there is never a part of north america without signal. hell people in england pick up the reception from it. so unless you are underground you get the signal. i don't want to get into a pissing match over who was more remote though. you say yours hasn't worked in some spots i am not gonna argue with you, since neither of us have a way to prove it. all i will say is that i love my radio and it has never let me down and it is nice not having to find a local station every hour.You have not been to the remote areas I have been. CBC also covers news that is important to a population that inhabit about 40% of Canada land mass directly and much more of Canada mineral resource wealth. The other networks barely have a presence.
You haven't explained what is wrong with the CBC, all you've done is is given some ideological reason why it shouldn't exist.Everyone defending the CBC is focused on the news. OK, so I agree, the CBC news programming is actually quite respectable. But I challenge you to sit through an episode of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" without wanting to shoot yourself.
The problem with the CBC is that it tries to get/set cultural norms using tax dollars taken from the pockets of Canadian taxpayers. It's not so much public television (funding is contributed) as it is state-run-television (funding is taken) which smacks of banana republics and former soviet-bloc countries.
Culture that cannot survive does not deserve to survive and the idea of the government using my tax dollars to explain my culture to me is just plain offensive. The despots in Quebec shouldn't be legislating language, and the CBC shouldn't be using my tax dollars to produce shit in the interests of promoting some asshole civil servant's vision of Canadian culture.
We're a very young country relative to most of our neighbours. I remember a long time ago I was talking to some lowest-common-denominator from the US who was making fun of the FLQ crisis. My response was "well when your country was roughly the age of this country you were in a full-scale civil war. Relatively speaking we're doing quite well at this stage"
We're Canadian, give is time and we'll figure it out - without the CBC picking our pockets to tell us what's Canadian.

It's watered down pablum for the masses who respond to sloganeering. Call CBC provincial or pedestrian or even colonial but I'd rather have some national media entity trying to promote a Canadian point of view than SUN TV.

Both the CBC and the BBC used to be good. Now they're both propaganda machines for the Government. They had steadily been going down hill for years. CBC offers the best radio and tv in Canada, so I object to the premise of this thread. Probably started by a failed private radio DJ who unsuccessfully applied to the CBC.
