and the bbc if he so desires. countless other programs. i have been in places with nothing, not even cell reception and the sat radio was killing it. after my gps i would say it is my most valuable piece of equipment.
You have not been to the remote areas I have been. I guarantee it. I go where there are no roads, let alone cell reception.

I flip between the comedy channels, Stern, and Dr. Laura. She freaking kills me - makes me feel bad about myself on one call but then reminds me that I do in fact have a good heart and treat people rightly.
stern, music and the 2 good comedy channels for me. very seldom i check out the trucking channel since they do nation wide traffic and drivers call in with problems on the road to avoid. the radio has never let me down ever.

I already have satelite radio. It only takes you so far. And a lot of the time when I'm on the road, I'm not in my car.

I'm good with the CBC.

I even listen to CBC 2 quitely in my office to help me concentrate during the day.

The CBC is a Canadian icon, part of our history and I really can't relate to those who would love to see it shut down.
Seen. I hate it though. As I get older I don't like spending $1 billion of my tax dollars for programming that can be (and is on a regular basis) delivered by other media, at no direct cost to me. Let CBC die. There would still by HNC, and the Canadian-produced crap shows would disappear. The remaining Canadian networks would be strengthened by the increased access to the advertising revenue the CBC currently consumes. Remove direct public funding and let them compete head to head with the other media corps, and Canadians would get what they want (ie. what they are willing to pay for).

i have been to some very remote areas. like driving on a road for 13 hours and not seeing another car and not having a cell reception for at least 10 of those hours. thing about the tracking pattern of the sat radio satellites is they go in a figure 8 pattern so there is never a part of north america without signal. hell people in england pick up the reception from it. so unless you are underground you get the signal. i don't want to get into a pissing match over who was more remote though. you say yours hasn't worked in some spots i am not gonna argue with you, since neither of us have a way to prove it. all i will say is that i love my radio and it has never let me down and it is nice not having to find a local station every hour.

i agree that cbc shouldn't be shut down. not my cup of tea but still it is a candian institution. it probably just needs to be run better.

I'm willing to bet my sweet ass that there are things that the gov't spends a billion on that you approve of and I do not.

Fortuntately, that's not how it works.

As I said, I regularly end up where there are no roads.

I have one project that I work on that I fly in by helicopter.

Another where I drive, then catch a train and hop of the train in the middle of nowhere.

The nearest road is 6 hours of bush away.

So the only excuse for the CBC is poor reception in remote areas.......I see.......how much is that worth?

so it's not that the radio doesn't work in those remote area's it's that you don't have your car and your radio is in the car. don't blame the radio lol.

Perhaps we should ask why are the other publicly funded stations like CTV, Global, Sun Network,City etc (yes they also get our tax funds through tax credits, grants etc) Canadian programs so bad?
If its a Canadian Program it gets tax dollars no matter which broadcaster. So why are the other networks that get public funds so bad?
Oh yea we also give tax dollars to American Productions that make movies here so if one of those are a stinker you gotta ask why is our tax dollars going to bad American Productions?
They all get a piece of the tax pie but CBC is the only one that people are aware gets tax dollars.

Someone who actually understands what goes on in the broadcast industry, finally. These points have been hi-lighted before, but some members choose to ignore them or just can't understand them.

CBC also covers news that is important to a population that inhabit about 40% of Canada land mass directly and much more of Canada mineral resource wealth. The other networks barely have a presence.

Everyone defending the CBC is focused on the news. OK, so I agree, the CBC news programming is actually quite respectable. But I challenge you to sit through an episode of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" without wanting to shoot yourself.

The problem with the CBC is that it tries to get/set cultural norms using tax dollars taken from the pockets of Canadian taxpayers. It's not so much public television (funding is contributed) as it is state-run-television (funding is taken) which smacks of banana republics and former soviet-bloc countries.

Culture that cannot survive does not deserve to survive and the idea of the government using my tax dollars to explain my culture to me is just plain offensive. The despots in Quebec shouldn't be legislating language, and the CBC shouldn't be using my tax dollars to produce shit in the interests of promoting some asshole civil servant's vision of Canadian culture
.

We're a very young country relative to most of our neighbours. I remember a long time ago I was talking to some lowest-common-denominator from the US who was making fun of the FLQ crisis. My response was "well when your country was roughly the age of this country you were in a full-scale civil war. Relatively speaking we're doing quite well at this stage"

We're Canadian, give is time and we'll figure it out - without the CBC picking our pockets to tell us what's Canadian.

That's what is wrong with the CBC.
You haven't explained what is wrong with the CBC, all you've done is is given some ideological reason why it shouldn't exist.
Oh sorry, you did mention "Little Mosque On The Prarie", should be reason enough I guess. Doesn't quite match up to Hoarders, or Storage Wars.
Please expand on the highlighted portion of your comment, give us an example

The CBC is not that bad. People who thinks the CBC is bad is because they can't think for themselves and follow like flies to shit.
+1
I like the CBC. I find it informative and a pretty decent way to give Canadian talent a chance to be heard. Have you ever listened or watched US media? It's watered down pablum for the masses who respond to sloganeering. Call CBC provincial or pedestrian or even colonial but I'd rather have some national media entity trying to promote a Canadian point of view than SUN TV.

Okay you guys that insult people who don't watch the CBC and who, presumeably, like shows no one else does (based soley on the ratings). Tell us which CBC shows you like the best. No Coronation Street or other BBC import allowed or Jeopardy or US import allowed either (these were the two top rated CBC TV shows excluding Hockey Night in Canada).

C'mon why do you think its great?

Why is CBC television and radio so bad compared to public broadcasters in other countries for example BBC UK
Both the CBC and the BBC used to be good. Now they're both propaganda machines for the Government. They had steadily been going down hill for years. But I would argue the BBC has been awful for longer.

BS

Also on TV : The Nature Of Things, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, Power & Politics all of which the content and production quality is second to none,
as well, and maybe most importantly the highest level in news broadcasting

Also on radio: Ideas (every single night), Vinyl Tap Hour with Randy Bachman

I listen to CBC fm and Jazz91.1 almost exclusively in my car.

CBC offers the best radio and tv in Canada, so I object to the premise of this thread. Probably started by a failed private radio DJ who unsuccessfully applied to the CBC.

Vinyl Tap Hour with Randy Bachman
Two thumbs up. Randy and his wife talking about musical themes, playing selected songs in those themes, playing his guitar, anecdotes from a life in the biz. Awesome show.
