Question for all you outraged Liberals:

If (for example) Cherry walked through DT Toronto one day and noticed maybe 4 or 5 Anglo-Canadians wear a poppy, but at the same time noticed virtually no visible minorities wear one, then why should recent immigrants or visible minorities in your opinion be immune to criticism??

Because one's personal observations made during a walk through downtown (a magic downtown, no less, where you were only able to see 4 or 5 white people wearing a poppy) does not give you enough data to accurately paint an entire (systemically marginalized) group of people with the same brush.

So you want Cherry to conduct a formal poll or survey to reach a conclusion?? Dont be silly.
Walking around Toronto and Mississauga for a few hours should give you a decent idea who's wearing one and who isnt

This is the stupidest thing I've read
And yours is the dumbest response I've read, since you're not making any counter-arguments at all

Coming up with some obtuse scenario to make some kind of delusional point is what I call stupid. Well what if Don Cherry bumped into 5 white Canadians not wearing a poppy but whore a Bruins jersey on a Tuesday? How should he respond?

Justifying bigotry is easy for you

I've heard the segment was pre-recorded. I'd like to fact check that. In that case, if Don's comments were so inflammatory, why did no one at SportsNet or Ron himself say, hold on, you can't say that. We can't air that?

Update: The show is filmed in the SportsNet studio in the CBC building in Toronto. They also aired the show more than once in different time zones across the country.

I believe the CC during the Toronto game is live but the Montreal and other cities are recorded.

Just want to take moment ask everyone to buy a poppy or give a donation this year.

The proceeds go to support those who serve and those who have fallen for our freedoms.
Perfect!
That would have been the easiest, least accusatory, and the most effective way.
But that's not really saying what he said in a different way.

The hard part is saying the part after "you people". I have no problem with the words "you people". The big mistake was after that, "you come over here...".

Even, "You people who don't wear a poppy should be ashamed of yourselfs....".

I don't think Cherry is racist....he made a really bad mistake.

See, now you're down to immature name-calling. Try making a valid argument instead.

A professionally done survey or poll usually only includes around 1,000 people or so: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/howcan-a-poll-of-only-100/
So walking or driving around the GTA for a few hours a day should give you plenty of sample size just by going with your eyeball alone as to who is wearing a poppy, and who isnt.

So my question remains, why should visible minorities or recent immigrants be immune to criticism?? Is it because they are of a slighty different colour??
And that makes them immune in your opinion??

Because he only saw about 10 people with which to form his opinion. Even if he saw a hundred people, he cannot make a judgement of millions. That's why.

It's like Phil announcing that there is no global warming because his grandfather hasn't noticed any change.

It's generalizing, how does Cherry know all those people who didn't wear a poppy are immigrants?

Even some of my "white" friends who were born here didn't wear a poppy because they said there are other ways to show appreciation to our Vets.

Sorry, you think it's totally cool for an 85 year old white dude to go on National Television and alienate an entire (again HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED) group of people based on his personal observations one afternoon while wandering around?

Do you even know any 85 year olds?? They're not exactly filled with keen insights into pop culture or society in general. My 85 year old grandmother was convinced for an entire week that the plumber, who cleared her sink, drain also stole her underwear (she later found them in a laundry hamper in her closet).

Give your head a shake man.

It was stupid of him to said what he said (even he acknowledges that).

It was probably equally stupid to allow him to stay on the air for as long as he was on the air for.

Now you're asking a stupid hypothetical question in an effort to try to justify his stupid actions.

The whole thing is stupid. Just let it go.

How do you know he only saw 10 people?? I could walk around the PATH for an hour and easily observe over 1,000 people whether they are wearing a poppy or not

Maybe he noticed a disproportionate amount of visible minorities not wearing a poppy and decided to single them out.

Again though, why should certain groups or segments of society be immune to criticism??
