Iris, I did not mean to sound like I have no sense of humour, however, you are very lucky if you have not had someone in Canada say to you "aren't all your relatives drunks?" It is a very popular misconception and I am sorry if in saying "wait a second," I gave offense.
you couldn't be more wrong, having been and lived in Russia let me tell you they do export their best stuff. The only time I have ever gotten sick because of a vodka was from a Russian one that isnt sold in the West, it was called Privyet (the Russian word for Hi!!) woke up the next day after some moderate drinking with a massive stomach ache.
I know over the years I have had several excellent vodkas, especially travelling through Russia to climb a mountain in Khazakstan, but can I remember their names? Nope...must be something to do with the cork/cap getting 'lost' or 'dropped in the fire' after the bottle(s) were opened.
My usual go-to is Stolichnaya (I keep a bottle in the freezer - yes I know the purist arguments against that, but it is the way I like it), but as stated in my last post, Crystal Head has impressed me and has taken up residence alongside the Stoli

Did I say that every Russian vodka that isn't sold in the West is the best??? I will entirely agree that much is total rotgut.

I've heard Grey Goose is the best but i'm unwilling to lay out that amount of money on a bottle of liquor. Vodka is the only liquor i like to drink on a regular basis and i like Absolut and Russian Standard the best. I'm not saying they are the best but it's what i prefer and i have tried most vodkas over the years.
I bought a bottle for a friend a few weeks ago because I thought he would like the bottle with no thought of what it would taste like. He insisted that we open it....I'm a fan! Its the smoothest best tasting vodka I've had.
Stoli is my 'go to' vodka but my Armenian neighbours ply me regularly with Russian Standard. They claim its the most stable of the vodkas.

Wybrowa and Stolis are a great bang for the buck...
I think Grey Goose is over-rated....
Can't stand Smirnoff or Absolut...

Stoli is great for a lower priced option..
There is a new (well fairly new anyway) brand called Ciroc.. It is distilled from grapes.. It is by far the smoothest Vodka I have ever tasted..
The challenge is our wonderful LCBO does not import this product. It can be found in the US and very often in the Duty Free shops down there.
I realize this does help you currently but, if you are travelling soon or know someone who is.... Ask for a bottle you will be very happy you did!!

I like Ciroc which is distilled from grapes but not currently available at the LCBO. You'll have to go to the US to get it.
One the best ones I've had recently is Tito's from Austin Texas. It's made from yellow corn and distilled in six times in copper pot stills. Cool story too. http://titosvodka.com/about/ Reasonably priced at $35 a bottle.

Crystal Head is highly overrated IMHO.
The past Crystal thread described it well. It's an enjoyable drink if you want smoothness, balance, and little flavouring. If you want bite and flavour go elsewhere. Just like the Grappas that comes in specially crafted bottles, as does Crystal. Would I buy it again, dunno.
