I've seen a subsequent interview with him where it was very clear that he is mentally ill.
If he is mentally ill ,what he does on that workplace. You forgot something. If you drink too much alcohol for long time, you'll become mentally ill, sooner or later. ( except Winston Churhcill )

I have been enjoying vodka more and more but I am by no means an expert. I just enjoy the taste and there is clearly a difference with the better vodkas.

But still somewhat new. So I have a few questions like what is better potato vodka or wheat vodka; what foods go well with vodka? What are the best brands and maybe some of the more obscure ones. I was at Pravda downtown once and the bartender gave me a spicy vodka to try and it was delicious but I don't know the name of it.

You see lots of scotch tastings around but I have not seen a vodka one ever.

Any intell would be great!
NEVER EVER COOL BEFORE DRINKING!!!!!! VODKA HAS TO BE AR ROOM TEMPERATURE. IT IS AN OLD RUSSIAN TRADITION. (Mikhail Bulgakov - The Heart of a dog )

IN THIS CASE YOU WILL DEFINITELY DETERMINE A QUALITY OF VODKA. IF A SMELL IS BAD DON’T DRINK. Vodka from the fridge never smell

Iris, I did not mean to sound like I have no sense of humour, however, you are very lucky if you have not had someone in Canada say to you "aren't all your relatives drunks?" It is a very popular misconception and I am sorry if in saying "wait a second," I gave offense.

The best Russian vodkas aren't exported to the West the entire production is consumed domestically.
you couldn't be more wrong, having been and lived in Russia let me tell you they do export their best stuff. The only time I have ever gotten sick because of a vodka was from a Russian one that isnt sold in the West, it was called Privyet (the Russian word for Hi!!) woke up the next day after some moderate drinking with a massive stomach ache.

I know over the years I have had several excellent vodkas, especially travelling through Russia to climb a mountain in Khazakstan, but can I remember their names? Nope...must be something to do with the cork/cap getting 'lost' or 'dropped in the fire' after the bottle(s) were opened.
My usual go-to is Stolichnaya (I keep a bottle in the freezer - yes I know the purist arguments against that, but it is the way I like it), but as stated in my last post, Crystal Head has impressed me and has taken up residence alongside the Stoli

Did I say that every Russian vodka that isn't sold in the West is the best??? I will entirely agree that much is total rotgut.

I've heard Grey Goose is the best but i'm unwilling to lay out that amount of money on a bottle of liquor. Vodka is the only liquor i like to drink on a regular basis and i like Absolut and Russian Standard the best. I'm not saying they are the best but it's what i prefer and i have tried most vodkas over the years.

What about the great Polish ones like Chopin or Belvedere. I had a great one called Fiddler that was a gift - unfortunately I have not found it over here.

I am drinking this stuff at the moment

http://www.crystalheadvodka.com/welcome

Very smooth drinking and a damn cool bottle.
I bought a bottle for a friend a few weeks ago because I thought he would like the bottle with no thought of what it would taste like. He insisted that we open it....I'm a fan! Its the smoothest best tasting vodka I've had.
Stoli is my 'go to' vodka but my Armenian neighbours ply me regularly with Russian Standard. They claim its the most stable of the vodkas.

Belvedere and Chopin are my go to Vodkas....

Wybrowa and Stolis are a great bang for the buck...

I think Grey Goose is over-rated....

Can't stand Smirnoff or Absolut...

As above Smirnoff and Absolut are tar when compared to Belvedere or Chopin...

I also agree Goose is overrated..

Stoli is great for a lower priced option..

There is a new (well fairly new anyway) brand called Ciroc.. It is distilled from grapes.. It is by far the smoothest Vodka I have ever tasted..
The challenge is our wonderful LCBO does not import this product. It can be found in the US and very often in the Duty Free shops down there.
I realize this does help you currently but, if you are travelling soon or know someone who is.... Ask for a bottle you will be very happy you did!!

At Work......
Some of my favorites:

Chopin
Luksusowa (Polish)
Skyy

For the mixed drink and straight up the Luksusowa is a great vodka at a reasonable price!

I find that the potato vodkas are a bit smoother.

IMHO

I like Ciroc which is distilled from grapes but not currently available at the LCBO. You'll have to go to the US to get it.

One the best ones I've had recently is Tito's from Austin Texas. It's made from yellow corn and distilled in six times in copper pot stills. Cool story too. http://titosvodka.com/about/ Reasonably priced at $35 a bottle.

From Wiki:

Tito's Handmade Vodka is a vodka produced in Austin, Texas, in the first legal distillery in Texas, established by Bert Butler "Tito" Beveridge II. A native of San Antonio, Texas, Beveridge received the diminutive nickname "Bertito", shortened to "Tito", from his Latino caretakers in childhood. Tito's Handmade Vodka is made from yellow corn, instead of the more commonly used wheat or potatoes, resulting in a mildly sweet aftertaste, and is distilled six times.

Commercial production began in 1997 when Beveridge formed Fifth Generation, Inc., and established the Mockingbird Distillery, producing just 1,000 cases that year. In 2007, he sold over 160,000 cases. All production is still maintained at the southeast Austin distillery, where he has expanded from one pot still to ten and from one bottling line to four. Despite the growing distribution, Fifth Generation, Inc. employs fewer than 18 people and is still produced in small batches.

Purposefully foregoing commercial advertising, Tito's Handmade Vodka has gained market share thanks to some prestigious awards, affordable pricing, and word of mouth advertising. Sales and distribution boomed in 2001 after Tito's Handmade Vodka unanimously won the Double Gold Medal for vodka at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, beating out 71 high-priced vodkas. Also that year, it received a four-star ranking from Spirit Journal and won four stars again in the 2007 edition. Tito's has also received multiple Growth Brand Awards by the Beverage Information Group, a beverage alcohol research firm. Tito's is distributed coast-to-coast across North America and Canada. Tito's is currently sponsoring Derrike Cope and his CFK Motorsports NASCAR team.

Crystal Head is highly overrated IMHO.

The past Crystal thread described it well. It's an enjoyable drink if you want smoothness, balance, and little flavouring. If you want bite and flavour go elsewhere. Just like the Grappas that comes in specially crafted bottles, as does Crystal. Would I buy it again, dunno.
