One time I ordered 4 pizzas from Pizza Nova with different toppings on each and they brought me 8 pizzas, a double of each. I told them I only ordered 4, they said it's their mistake so I get to keep all 8 pizzas and only have to pay for 4. That was nice of them.

not your business
Tell them and give the extra back. I've done this twice. It made me feel good.

On the other hand, if a big company like rogers undercharges me, I would not say a word.

Or two dead drug dealers in an alley and a big bag of money - that would DEFINITELY be a different story.
Did you see No country for old men? I think I will leave the money and walk away.

Back to the original question, I will definitely let the young lady know what happened and give the money back to her.

I walked away once. Downtown Hamilton.

She rang my order at a corner store, gave me the wrong change.

I told her it was wrong, did a quick math estimate to show her she was way off.

She rang it up again. Still wrong.
Again did a quick count showing roughly what it should be and she was significantly off

Rang it up again, yet a different amount, still off, still in my favor.

Either by this time or the next time I figure, fuck it. Stupidity tax and I paid and walked.

Hell, what can I do, go back behind the counter and ring it up myself. What irked me is that I showed it should be near X dollars, and each time she ran it up short and I had to remind her that her math was wrong. I suppose looking back I could have just did the math in my head, figured out the right amount [I can do that] and give her the right amount, but she probably would kept the excess if she could figure out the math. But screw it. I gave all the chances in the world and it kinda pissed me off. Darwin for the win.

Another time I drove about 7 or 8 KM. I was almost home and realized I forgot to pay the bill at Chess's Fish and Chips in St John's. I went back right away and paid up. Girl didn't seem to notice or care. No regrets, a man's got to do what a man's got to do but it couldn't hurt to show a bit of appreciation.

Otherwise, always say something. Don't be "that guy".

Wrong. That is illegal in Canada, they can fire her but can't make her make up the money or cut it from her pay.
It is illegal but it does happen because they are banking on their employees either not knowing their rights or not standing up for them because they don't want to lose their jobs.

Happens all the time these days... kids now-a-days can't make change unless they use the machine. :frusty:

I will often try and get rid of extra change when paying in cash... (e.g. if total is 22.62, I may give them 2 twenties and then 12 cents or something, to avoid a pocket full of change.) This usually confuses them, which is not my intention, I'm just getting rid of change.

In any case, I always let them know if they've made a mistake...

You have to point out their mistake. None of us are perfect.
If they insist they are correct then its OK to keep the money.

.
Yes I did.

And if I found say a big suitcase full of 100 dollar bills and 2 dead drug dealers, the first thing I'd do is get in my car and drive somewhere, dump all the cash into the backseat and throw the case out.

Then drive somewhere else - like close to a police station.

Then I'd check each brick of 100's for the "no country for old men" transmitter.

Then I'd drive somewhere else.

Then I would remove any wrapping straps lest it be a transmitter.

Then drive somewhere else and start checking bills for transmitters.

Then drive to some spy shop and buy one of those devices that scan for bugs.

Then install a safe in my basement floor and park the money.

It happened to me a few days ago though only a trivial amount. Bill for my items came to $11.89 or something, I gave her a 20, she punches it in, machine tells her to give me $8.11 in change. At that point I realize I have a twoonie so I gave her that hoping to get a $10 and 11 cents--big mistake. The machine didn't tell her how to deal with that and it took her FOR-EVER to make change. She pulled out a calculator, and typed something in several times. Finally after probably a minute she gives me way too much change, I think I got the twoonie back.

I just said, you made a mistake, and left the extra on the counter. She picked up her calculator and was trying it again as I wandered off with my items.

Yes, I've had that happen many times as well too.

A huge many people suck at math.

Mind you, one time my bill was $17.42 or something like that and I gave her $23.42 or something like that, expecting to get a 5 back and it was actually 6. I was embarassed and perplexed that I would make such a dumb mistake.

I have made it a habit to keep any change given in my hand, visible, so that I don't appear to be pulling a fast one.

If a cashier gives me too much, I point it out. If they give me too little, I point it out. I'm not so desperate that I need the $5 and if I was, this wouldn't be the way to deal with it.

One time I was signing my kids up for membership at the YMCA, and for some godforsaken reason I was paying in cash. The woman at the counter gave me change, and shorted me $15. I said, "That's not the right amount." She spent at least 10 minutes berating me over the fact that she had given me the correct amount - which she hadn't. (Trust me, I teach Calculus.) I mulled over calling over her supervisor and laying a complaint. It's a tough call; she was a rude, arrogant bitch, but at the same time, did I want her to lose her job and all the shit goes with that? On that day, I shrugged my shoulders and walked away, knowing that the end of the day when the reconciled the till, she would be $15 over. On another day I would have been harsher.

My 11 year old was standing beside me at the time and had done the math correctly and pointed out to me on the street that the attendant was wrong. We had a long talk about whether it was worth making a point about shit like that. The discussion was worth much more than 15 bucks.

Is there not some word in English for taking/keeping what does not belong to you?

Give it back ofcourse. She could get shit for it, might have to pay from her own pocket and worse lose her job.

I can't believe some people live by such uncertain values/principles these days. Things like this should be obvious as to what you need or need not do... It shouldn't make one go on a forum, wondering what you should've done.

I suggest some to sit down and actually think or write down some strong values/principles to live your life by. That way you won't be left wondering what you should've done or should do when you're in such situations. You'll know instantly what to do and react without hesitation or second thoughts just like a master samurai's decisive moves with his sword, one who has no time to hesitate.

Of course should have returned the money, just as if you were shorted you would expect it to be corrected. as far as other comments about not being able to make change, using a calculator etc, and still screwing up... I was at the dentist several years ago, paid cash for a cleaning, receptionist takes out a calculator to do the math, it's wrong...in my favour. I tell her that there's a mistake , she apologizes, does her thing with the calculator again and wants to give me even more money back. I tell he that it's still wrong, she calculates again and says, "No, that's the right amount" I knew in my head that it was wrong but what can you do when she says it's right, and she says it with attitude like I'm the asshole...if she knew simple math it would have told her she was wrong
I worked in retail while going through high school, the cash register wasn't an electronic with change calculated and you always counted the change back to the customer . In other words say the bill is $ 12.67 and customer gave you a 20, you counted the change back to the customer "that's $12.70, $12.75, $13.00, $15.00 and $20.00 Long gone are those days . Now often I find you just get handed the change
