So a basic question on honesty.....

I call and place an order for pick up for a pizza... The order comes to $17.85 and they say it'll be ready in 15mins.

I get there and tell the girl my order and she goes and gets the pizza and gives it to me. I then ask for a can of coke also and she gives it to me. I say thanks and hand her a $20. bill.

She then gives me back a $10bill, $5bill, two toonies, a 25cent and a 10cent
Then she says Merry Xmas, bye and turns and goes to the back of the store and starts making another pizza order.

So what would you do at this point?

I always correct these kinds of mistakes - firstly it's the right thing to do and also I figure that the cashier would probably get dinged by the management for any errors in the till at the end of her/his shift.

The only thing I'd wonder in your case - was she giving you a pizza and a coke for $2.65 as a Christmas present?

Lol, that's what I said. I asked her "are you giving free pizza's away for xmas" as I waved the 10 & 5 in the air. She then walks over and asks no, why?

I show her all the change and ask her if it looks right to her. After a few seconds she says no then blushes and takes the change from my hand and gives me back the correct amount. She says sorry for the mistake and I said don't worry about it Happy Holidays and leave.

Well all of that would have been good to know in post#1. Say thank you, then ask for her number.

Where do you come up with a random number like $2.65?
A large mistake that you immediately realize is a mistake $18 pizza + coke and she gives you back $17.35
Am I the only one who thinks two toonies are worth $4.00?

These days, all the registers calculate change and no one working retail needs to know how to do arithmetic anymore. When a mistake gets made, because everyone's brain is on autopilot, it often goes unnoticed. I usually like to add some coins to my payment to reduce the amount of loose change I will get in return (like paying with a Toonie plus 23 cents for a $1.23 coffee bill so I can get a dollar back instead of 77 cents). I can't believe how often something like that messes up a retail clerk. I can't wait to see the pandemonium that comes when the pennies are out of circulation.

But the thread above shows that not only retail clerks are rusty on their arithmetic.

At any rate, it's always the right thing to do to point out a mistake in the exchange of money. After all, if you were on the short end, you'd hope someone would be honest with you.

A large mistake that you immediately realize is a mistake $18 pizza + coke and she gives you back $19.35 absolutely you know a mistake has been made and you should say I'm sorry but you gave me back too much change.

That is different from she gives you back an extra dollar or two or even five and you don't realize it until you are well out the door.

21 years old an from the middle east. Her family must be in a panic as she's almost past date. Maybe she was hoping for your number.

What I always do - tell them and give it back.

Now, if a big bag of money were to fall off the back of Brinks Truck, that might be a different story.......

Or two dead drug dealers in an alley and a big bag of money - that would DEFINITELY be a different story.

I used to work at a clothing store and sometimes my till was over and sometimes short (mind you there was other staff members using it too ) The company is going to assume that you're either careless about counting the money, or unable to count the money properly at times, or that you're somehow taking money from the till. They might just refuse to let you handle cash, though if they think you're stealing from the till they probably won't keep you around. So its best to be honest and give the money back if they give you too much to prevent them from getting fired.
