He is also the top scoring defender in the World cup, and scored more goals than 90% of all players in the tournament regardless of postion. Only 16 other players scored two goals, and only eight scored 3...(one being Zidane, 2 of which were charity penalty shots).
Matterazzi's goals were 2 of the best goals scored in the tournament.
I guess in that sense you could try to compare him to a very mild version of Todd Bertuzzi???
Okay... it's good to be proud and nationalistic, but let's not get ridiculous here. The man scored 2 back post headers, that accounts primarily for good timing and positioning. Every team has at least one defender whose role it is to do exactly that. Jason DeVos and Kevin McKenna of Canada used to do it all of the time. Most of their goals were no different than Matt-boy's... other than that they weren't in a World Cup game.
But my point is, that while his second was obviously an important goal, neither were nowhere near being highlight reel goals. One of the sports networks actually put together a top ten list of the best goals and unfortunately... neither of Matty's goals were on it. Now if he had done a Rossi or Larsson "Superman" style of header, I would be more inclined to agree with you, but seriously... And just to show you that I'm not trying to be an Italia basher, both of the goals in the win over Germany were far superior and worthy of being goals of the tournament. Both beautiful set-ups and superior finishing.
As for Todd Bertuzzi... and this goes out to Slowandeasy, as well... I know that he's Italian and it makes for an appropriate comparison, but... IN... YOUR... DREAMS!!
Forget about his past with Moore, or even that he had a subpar year in '05-06... The man is a superior athlete in his chosen sport. Comparatively speaking, Matt-boy can't touch Bertuzzi's talent, tenacity or focus.
A far more reasonable comparison, if you have to make one, would be Marty Mcsorley. And that's Mcsorley in his "consideration for Team Canada" years, not his axe wielding days. Tough... dirty... tenacious... with a sprinkling of talent... able to fill the appropriate role and... do whatever it takes to win.
And no matter how much you might dislike the man, Zidane is much more than JUST a good player. No matter how good of a team I think the French had, it doesn't go anywhere without Zidane. Just as Cannavaro is the field General of Italy, so too is Zidane for France. And regardless of his stupidity in extras of the last game, it does not wash away the body of work that he created throughout the rest of the tournament. Cannavarro was in a word... megaawesometotheultimatemax. But Zidane was just a little bit better and judged, ultimately, to have been more impotant to his team's success.
Well... at least until that fateful moment when all he wanted to do was take a little bite of Matty's nipples. It was only fair as Matty had just given him a purple nurple. But he didn't quite judge Matty's speed, as he was running towards him and just ended up getting it all wrong...
