I am not a big fan on PK shootouts, nonetheless congrats to the Italian Team.

Retaliate like that. French Press will grill him for that. Could have made a difference in PK,s..
I agree and ,quite possibly on the latter.

Because in the game I saw the referee consulted his assistant... who is Argentinian, BTW.

Today, Italy was the better team. A well deserved win. A hard loss. Tomorrow? Who knows?

I feel for Zidane. He picked the worst possible time to blow his cool... we all lose it from time to time, but hope not to blow it when it means so much. I am sure he regrets it more than anyone else... an inglorious exit from a glorious career!

Perry
Perry... you also know that Argentinian soccer is filled with Italian Argentinians at the highest level right??? BTW.. not interested in debating the red card, I think that it was the right call...

I thought it was a pretty good game, and Italy got the win... As a fan, I love the shootout... as a North American, I would not want the Championship of the world awarded in this way...

Zidane had a major brain fart, and was probably frustrated that he did not win the game with that header in OT.....

Materazzi... the guy plays hard, with emotion, and he plays to win.... I have not seen enough of his games to say that he is a dirty player or not... the clips that were posted earlier in this post, don't make him look good, but then again I am sure that you could do the same for almost any player in the world......

Regardless of what Materazzi said to Zidane, the head but was just a dumb way to react, by a "classy player"....

massman. I smell a rat. Seriously this is so strange that I think FIFA should investigate zidane for throwing the game by getting himself sent off. Something is messed here. WTF????????????????[/QUOTE said:
A joke from my colleague before the start of the world cup....

Q. Who is going to win the World Cup?????
A. Italy... they already have the match fixed!!!

I laughed.... but this made me think..... The only thing that blows this out of the water is that Zidane had a great header earlier in OT that could have won the game???

Who knows... with the Mafia's presence in that part of the world... anything is possible...

Italy earned it this year, BUT...

Lol. Yes it is all about who wins in the end. Every red card, every twist and turn, it all goes towards who the better team is in the end. Every aspect of this sport, is this sport.
...I wish we could rewind the clock four years... to when Italy was eliminated in 02. I cant remember hearing so much sour grapes from so many sore losers... The hypocrisy of some of their fans amazes me sometimes.

SK.

Talk about dirty.

At least I know, Italy dived and cried their way to victory this year.
I just laugh at all the eye'tal'yens with their flags.
They played cheap and dirty.
Classless.
Congrats :)

He was thinking that his name is LUIS FIGO and that headbutts in the World Cup are not a serious offense.

There's no doubt that was a major brain cramp by ZZ, giving the Italians a chance to create major drama.

But the appearance of the referee changing his decision under pressure from the Italians badly hurts the credibility of the match - that after so many cautions were given this year to players for disputing decisions.

.
I don't agree with you sorry , the head butt was blatant no team should get away with that it was right to show the video. I f these things are not called tha's when the riots start.

Zidane won the golden ball award, and has said that he will soon reveal what Materazzi said to provoke his attack.

What I find more disturbing is after the head butt Materazzi sat up and as he stood up began clapping?

WTF? It was almost as if he completely faked how hard he was hit.

Those clips are just the tip of the iceberg, i could dig up a lot more on Materazzi if I had the energy, which I dont.

Some magazine ran a poll on who was the dirtiest player in the last 50 years.
Guess who finished first by a landslide??!!

Correction on the Aussie part... penalty in injury time of the second half... no extras. I would hate to be corrected by an Italia fan looking to take me down for peanuts...

Forget about the enitire game up until the penalty kicks.
Italy scored all of their kicks...the French didn't. Therefore the better team won? That day Italy was better at penalty kicks..get over it. And no I'm not an Italian fan, just calling it like it is.

"that is the silliest logic ever!!!!!!!!!! 3-0??"

Penalty kick was the result of a french dive. 0-0

Crossbar hit by an Italian player 1-0

Goal disallowed 2-0

Header by Matterassi 3-0

"Also, France is a complete team with the exception of the clown in goal. Do you know Thuram was once considered the best defender on the planet"

A has been that should have retired. Italy could have played Maldini who is considered better then him. By the way Cannavaro and Nesta are rated better defensemen.

"and that Vieira is a top class player?? So is Trez. To say France rely on only two men is patently false."

They haven't scored much. Italy pretty much every team player has scored once.

"Listen the ball bounced well for Italy, it could have EASILY been France holding that cup."

Yeah the ball bounced well when France won the Euro cup by scoring a late goal when the ref added three minutes of extra time too much.

And it also bounced well when France beat Italy on Penalty Kicks back in 1998. In other words 1998 French team did not deserve the win.

It wasn't just what Materazzi said immediately before the head butt, clips showed that he had been trash talking Zidane several times during the match. Materazzi's embellishment of the foul certainly deserves some kind of acting award. Zidane understands Italian fluently, having played 5 years in the Italian League with Juventus.
Here is the first report of what put finally Zidane over the edge:

"Talk about dirty."

Yeah a lot of fouls, elbows and head butts thrown by the french

"At least I know, Italy dived and cried their way to victory this year."

Better then Germany, France, Brazil, England and Portugal who dove and whined their way to a loss. :)
