The other day someone commented in my inbox and then like 5 more people joined the conversation and commented on it. Is this on my profile or is it actually in my inbox ? Seems weird if others can see my private messages

Yeah I was part of that stupidity too. Some dummy started a group chat and added a bunch of random people. Most of us just left the convo so it's gone from my inbox.
When someone starts a private message conversation, they can add multiple handles. Those other people can only see the message(s) in your inbox to which they were invited to join.
