I'm a big hockey guy....not putting too much weight on this. Not done in any mean spirited way.....it was a heat of the moment gesture that understandably he wishes he could take bCk.

let it go.

^this.

Frustrated kid. Only difference is his screw up was seen by 15,000 live and millions on tv. He deserves some kind of punishment but hardly an international incident.

I agree, didn't watch the game, saw this thread and the video. Heat of the moment, no big deal. Some fan got a Russian hockey stick, cool. :) (as long as they weren't hurt that bad)

I admit I'm not much of a "professional" sports spectator so perhaps this is more common than I realize. I've just always believed ( and encouraged in my own kids ) sportsmanlike behaviour is important. This, to me at least, is a Canadian trait.
I don't know, I think this is wrong. I can understand frustration and disappointment but the rest of his teammates managed to restrain themselves...
I do know that if he were my son I'd pull him off the ice by his ear for pulling that crap. He's a young man representing his country and he had a 5 year olds temper tantrum. Maybe it's a girl thing.....

i think we all agree it was wrong, but i have to agree with frank on this one, it was a heat of the moment thing and a lot of emotion was at play, and lets not forget they were all teenagers and i think we have all done a few things we regret when we were in our teens.

Europeans are a strange and crafty lot. I remember a game last year where a Finn player was awarded a penalty shot. He pretended he hurt his hand and was incapable of taking the shot which allowed his coach to pick another who just happens to be the best shooter on the Finn team.

Then there was the year when the Russians had nothing to gain in a game against Canada. Instead of playing hockey they simply grabbed every Canadian player by the neck and wrestle them to the ice.

Ice wrestling? What year/game was that?

I assume he means the Piestany, Czechoslovakia(now Slovakia) incident in 1987.

I get around.
Wait a minute, I thought over-wrought reactions, being upset and angry was a Canadian hockey trait.

and the Russians were known for lacking heart or feeling or emotion. So tossing the stick is Canadian.

I don't think Russian hockey player was trying to hit somebody. Frustration and nothing more.Nobody likes to loose.

Back in the Soviet days Russian hockey players were not allowed to fight. There was never any fights between Russian hockey teams on the ice. Sometimes Canadian hockey players would try to start fights but Russians would always try to avoid. Once in a blue moon a fight would break out between Russian and Canadian players and then they would stop showing the game on TV right away and start showing the news and only after when the fight is over put back the hockey game. They wouldnt even show a single hockey fight on TV. Basically violence, fighting and stick tossing in hockey was introduced by Canadians. Originally Russia would always play more friendly non contact hockey compare to Canadian physical hockey and wrestling on the boards

Agreed, I definitely feel his frustration and don't think it was done with ill intentions. But. There's a thing called sportsmanship and when you're playing in front of kids who look up to you, behaviour like this is unacceptable. I'm a former college athlete myself and I talked about this with a close family friend who is an Olympics winner and we both think it's rather disgraceful. When you choose to compete professionally, you choose to strive for excellence and it doesn't stop at your athletic performance.
