When you choose to compete professionally, you choose to strive for excellence and it doesn't stop at your athletic performance.
And this is why this teenaged amateur should not be held to the same standards as professionals who are older/more mature.

I've seen young male fans get tossed out of the ACC for throwing junk on the ice, why shouldn't young male Russian hockey players be held to the same standard for throwing projectiles into the stands?

I've just always believed ( and encouraged in my own kids ) sportsmanlike behaviour is important. This, to me at least, is a Canadian trait.
Bullshit. Good sportsmanship means no fighting. Canadians love their hockey fights.

There's a diffrence between a hockey fight and throwing a stick into a crowd of people. You don't play the game without intimidation, bravado and sometimes fighting, thats what the players sign up for. A spectator got hit though. Sure they got a great souvenir and it could certainly be chalked up to frustration on the players part....doesn't make it ok. Sportsmanship means play your ass off but win or lose accept it with class.

I played hockey for quite a few years at a pretty competitive level. Not once did I ever throw my stick into the crowd, that's insane. I slammed it against the glass or boards a few times. That player should be reprimanded fully. No excuse for that.
