Canada really should invest in building a comprehensive drone/robotics based system of national defense. Land/Sea/Air. This will have vast dual use applications as well and could be a platform to advance Canadas tech industry.
If we don't take the mutual security approach, it will be resolved by war. To think Russia has no legitimate interests that should be considered is utterly absurd.

Ukraine was never going to be let into NATO, there was no need for Putin to invade.
If you think that is a viable option you are really clueless. If Canada entered into a mutual defense agreement with China and China started basing troops here, what do you think the USA would do? What if Canada joined BNR? When Biden was certain Russia was about to attack within 2 weeks, did he lift a FINGER to try and stop it? That should be pretty instructive on who was really behind the war.

Russia is building and reinforcing the Finnish border, where that leads we will know in the fullness of time. One war at a time. Perhaps as part of the negotiations with the US, they will agree that there will be very limited foreign troops based in Finland. and no nukes in Sweden and Finland. Sweden has been defacto NATO.

Under most other presidents, there would be wild, long-standing discussions about how the US alienated Canada to the point where it was seeking a defensive alliance against the US.

Trump has been talking about annexing Canada for a while now and Canada has to consider defensive alliances to maintain independence.
Just as Ukraine sought greater support from elsewhere when Russia turned on it, Canada and Mexico may well have to do the same.
