Who was the last man born in the United States to win a Formula One Grand Prix?
Hint: He was filthy rich from a cosmetics company founded by his family.
Peter Revson. Revson won the British and Canadian Grands Prix in 1973 for
McLaren, with Yardley sponsorship. He moved to
Shadow Racing for the 1974 season, and was killed in practice for the 1974 South African Grand Prix at
Kyalami.
Revson was the nephew of
Charles Revson, the founder of
Revlon Cosmetics. Peter was the son and heir apparent of
Martin Revson, whose fortune was reputed to be in the neighbourhood of $1 Billion, which was a LOT of money, in the early 70's.
Revson's replacement at Shadow,
Tom Pryce, was also killed at Kyalami, in a freak accident at the 1977 South African Grand Prix. Pryce hit and killed one of the race marshals,
Fredrik Jansen van Vuuren, who had stupidly run across the track in mid race, intending to put out a fire on a car that had suffered engine failure, (the second Shadow, driven by
Renzo Zorsi). The collision cut van Vuuren's body in half, and the fire extinguisher he had been carrying hit Pryce in the head, killing him instantly. The dead Pryce overtook several cars that were breaking for
Crowthorne Corner, at the end of the start/ finish straight, before crashing into the runoff area.
