Plan is to go to Cuba in April. I will need insurance for medical coverage. I have no real idea as to what I need or costs or where to obtain short term coverage. In my travels before my American Express account covered everything but since I no longer have their card I must get my own. Any help would be appreciated.

Try CAA...I buy travel insurance there on a yearly basis..about $260/yr family of four. That gives me 15 visits to the states. I don't know about cuba though.

If you want travel insurance, I find that Manulife is the easiest and cheapest. buy Online.

If you are only getting it because travel agent says Cuba requires it, don't bother. They do not ask for it , and if they did, you can buy it on the spot in the airport.

It's pretty cheap - online or through your financial advisor. If it's only you (as opposed to a family), go direct online to Manulife or Blue Cross. And yes, no matter where you're going outside Canada, even if only for a weekend, I would certainly recommend getting travel insurance. Medical costs are prohibitive everywhere. One last piece of advice - if you do need to make a claim or get medical help, make sure you follow the proper procedures BEFOREHAND - read your policy. Insurance companies will try to not pay unless legally obligated - there's no such this as morally obligated to them.

Go to your bank. they all sell travel insurance. Cheap.

Does Cuba still require proof of medical insurance for tourists?

The official documentation says that they do. However, they have never asked me, and I believe you can buy it on the spot for something like $5 a day.

OHIP provides out of province coverage for minor ailments, and the medical system in Cuba is cheap and effective. I used it once.

Here, there and everywhere.
Bon Voyage which is sold through Travel Cuts is a very good comprehensive policy that saved my but more than once.

Going without insurance is simply dumb in my opinion.

RBC sells travel insurance call Travel Health Protector at any of their branches. Price depends on your age and length of travel and if there are any existing medical conditions that you need to disclose.

You do not need to be a RBC client to buy their travel insurance.

Always purchase travel insurance, OHIP, in MANY instances WILL NOT over you if you are out of the province.

I bought RBC insurance for a friend travelling to Cuba a few years ago. I did it on-line. Took about 5 min and it was less than $30....

Do you have coverage via work? My plan with my SO gives me full coverage while I'm away with no charge.
If you have a work plan check it out with your boss or human resources dept. They may have better options as well.

RBc sells travel insurance there is a location at Young and Bloor in the Bay Centre, and CAA it is based on the length of your trip.

So far each time I have traveled I've only paid about $20 to $30 for travel insurance. When I was shooting porn in LA I had to use it at that time it was CAA travel. they took care of everything I just had to show them the bill from the LA hospital I was in.

I presume your (non amex) card isn't covering it (most do) - I would call your home insurance people - they can add a yearly blanket coverage fairly cheap.
Also - (and I have done this for India trips) buy more than the basic (which usually sucks).

Since I am paying something anyway - I "deluxe it up" to cut the bullshit restrictions / exclusions.

While on the topic - found out the other day your CC will not cover auto rental unless you DECLINE the rental agency coverage. So if your CC has better coverage it fails to kick in unless you completely opt out of the rental insurance. Just saying. Pissed me off. I thought I had super duper double coverage.

Generally insurance is an option when booking the trip. Checked itravel2000 and medical insurance for 1 week to Cuba is $28. What's the advantage to purchasing insurance separate from the trip?

I rather do it thru the phone (Rbc), I don't feel comfortable with putting my personal information on line. (yes , I know about secure servers, but nowadays with hackers nothing is secure)

RBC travel insurance wasnt recognized in Philippines so it be out-of-pocket. Going to Colombia this time. Any opinion on Blue Cross travel insurance? Cost a bit more and has annual coverage. CAA now uses their own insurance company before they used manulife. I feel blue cross is most recognized around the world.
