Having cars and cyclists share the same road is asinine to begin with.
The Singaporians are way ahead of us. They make pedestrians and cyclists share the same sidewalk.
This should save 5-10 lives every year if Toronto adopted the same

EDIT: @roddermac beat me to it

The city should contract this idea out to Metrolinx. It'll only cost taxpayers a few billion dollars.

Agreed. Having bikes share the road with cars is fucking insane. I always ride on the sidewalk if I can. I get off the sidewalk if I see pedestrians using it, and then get back on. Trusting drivers is russian roulette with 5 bullets in the chamber. I am amazed when I see parents with tots in kiddie seats on the back of the bike, riding in traffic. Just a matter of time before it ends badly.

Happened to a friend of mine in high school. Was riding his bike and got clipped from behind by a minivan.
Almost wound up paraplegic. It took 12 months of rehab just so he could walk again.

Sorry to say it, but we're gonna have a lot more deaths and other serious injuries the more bike lanes the City creates

I'm sure Robert chooses to ride on the sidewalk on those sections that have no bike lanes because the roads are too dangerous not because bike lanes are dangerous.

Was your friend riding on the bike lane when he was clipped by a minivan? How on earth did the minivan clip your cyclist friend from behind on a bike lane. If he was riding on a bike lane how does having no bike lane protect him?

He was probably clipped from behind because there was no bike lane. So the point Robert was making was build more bike lanes so that he wouldn't have to ride on the sidewalk.

Robert's point was he'd rather not share the road with cars but rather share the sidewalk with pedestrians so build more bike lanes so that he doesn't have to share with either.

No shit. These things should have kept him safe. Looks like they could stop a truck.

Years ago working for a courier company in the city, i saw a biker courier downtown walking his bike on the sidewalk who I knew as he was going towards his office and asked him why he wasn't riding his bike, he said it was a $300. fine to ride on the sidewalk. If this is still the law there should be 100,s of fines given but I am sure they are not enforced.

Mixing careless, negligent and reckless drivers with anyone is deadly:

Kaur, 26, was hit while riding her bike on Burnhamthorpe Road, near Kipling Avenue, at 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 24. She was reportedly riding with her husband and another person when she was struck by a 28-year-old driver, who stayed at the scene. He was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm or death.

And attitudes like yours are more telling of why cyclists will continue to be doored, hit, broken, maimed and killed by drivers.
Everyone gets their day in court, call X-COPPER and the driver will beat the charge.

I have been riding on an empty sidewalk a few times with no pedestrians in sight and had cyclists riding in the bike lane yell angrily at me to get off the side walk. My usual response depending on size and age of the offender is to yell back "fuck off".

Sure.

Yeah right.

As if.

Too funny:

".... cyclists riding in the bike lane yell angrily at me to get off the sidewalk."

Thanks for this morning's made-up, make-believe, fairy-tale post.

Happy tricycling!
